Hey everyone. I hope your doing well. I was just wondering if anyone ever experienced MANIA while on an AD but never before taking the AD. Myself like clock work over 3 years AD have set off bi-polar. Right now I have been weening off of my medications (AD, Zyprexa) Now just taking .5mg Risperdol at the best compromise I was willing to do for now. Of course, as one would have it , I have it set it my head that there ARE people who will never have sever bi-polar symptoms accompanied on their depression unless on an AD. Of course I also undertand there are people who once have triggered the disease will even when not on an AD go manic, again. Im hoping there are someone out there who can relate to AD triggered mania and who have managed to quit their AD with out relapse of mania. I cant lie im pretty depressed. But the side effects of anti psycs (akathesia) are not worth it. Plus I find they void the happy like benifits of the AD leaving just not really caring.

Again, I wish you all well. I know this is verry verry hard.

i'm pretty sure that i've experienced AD enduced mania or at least mania while on AD's. but not the one you've mentioned. i was on celexa and then paxil and both made the bp go haywire. i'm now off both. ( this is my second day free of any AD) so i dont know how i'm going to do. i'm on topamax and geodon for the bp and have only been recently diagnosed with bp. so i'm just really not much help. i've been very manic on AD"s though and then crashed. needed some more help and thats what led to the diagnosis finally after years of this kind of thing happening. so maybe you just havent found the right combo of pills. but i just wanted you to know your not alone and say hi at least. i know i wasnt much help. but a friendly hi is always nice.

If it is Zyprexa you are talking about, then it is classified as a atypical anti-psychotic. It does have an antidepressant like effects, but it is used to control symptoms of mania or rage.

From what I understant, it is supposed to calm down mania or used to prevent an episide. But I have never heard of then inducing mania.

I took Zyprexa for about a months in July 2006, and it made my mania better. Right now I am on Litium and Geogon another antiphychotic and it had been working great. It has minor side effects, but it has been working well.

I would check with your Dr. and let them knoe your symptoms, and maybe even change beds. Cause this one is not working for you.

ID like to thank you both very much for your replies. :) IM cracking right now not on an AD thinking I should get back on it, but that means a mood stabiliser and the ones they like to rx (zyprexa risperdol, and other anti psyc's make me go very AKATHESIA..... its hard I dont know what I am goin to do I meet with my doctor on friday.

Thanks so much for your replies. I get so depressed sometimes when no one has anything to say :( Although I am also guilty of this)

Some AD's are more prone to inducing mania than others. I was on imipramine years ago and had my first true full blown manic episode. I've taken other AD's over the years with no problems. Just because that one didn't work out for you doesn't mean another won't. Hang in there
