New here with a 7 yr old with bipolar

Hi I have legal guardianship of a 7yr old child who has been diagnosed with bipolar.I'm looking for a place to go when I have questions or am having a hard day.  Does anyone here have children with bipolar.  KBears mom had bipolar.  His parents rights were taken away when he was just a year old and his grandmother adopted him.  She passed away last august (she had a rare heart condition).  She was a very dear friend of my familys.  We have always been a part of KBears life and love having him.  Some days it gets very hard but we make it through.  He is currently taking rispedal, concerta and ritalin.  He is going to be tested for fetal alcohol syndrom in january also.

You are not alone, and you have found an amazing site. My son was dx at 8 1/2. And while his condition is managed well, and he is balanced on the medication, it did take a long time to get there. The first 11 months was about going step by step methodically with one medication at a time until we addressed all his issues and got everything balanced out. Today he is 14, and while we are in the throws of teenage hood which posses its own challenges, he is a great kid. But, I won't lie. Life for him, how he sees the world, how he experiences the world is harder on him then others because he feels things at such a deep level all the time. It also does cause him to act different than the average kid who would gloss over some issues that wouldn't be a big deal to them. As a result, other kids notice him and can be very cruel with a lot of bullying. It is very hard on my son. BUT, he hangs in there. We also noticed a dietary issue of certain foods/drinks that my would mess with our sons medications. Caffeine is a HUGE no no for him....which is found in sodas and chocolate, so he has learned not to have them. Again....not easy for him, but he does it (most of the time).

It's nice to know I'm not alone. I was told to stay away from gluten. I heard that it's not good for people with b/p. I am going to do some studying on that. I didn't know that caffeine is bad for them. My little guy has been through a lot. His parents rights were taken away when he was about 2 yrs old. His grandmother adopted him. (she had a rare heart condition). SHe was a very close friend of mine and my husbands and she passed away onAugust 25, 2006. They were living with us/we were taking care of both of them. After she died we filed for legal guardianship and that was granted. We have had him since. He has been through a lot but is doing really good.

I also hear nitrates are an issue. Especially for the young ones, but as of yet, I have been unable to cut out all nitrates...they are found in luncheon meats, most fast food hamburgers except In & Out. Good luck. LFW
