Yikes! Why RAI twice? This one time threw me for a loop, more than I expected. My taste buds are almost all gone and I was queasy all week. My stomach is still unsettled and it never occurred to me that I'd have to crawl back out of being hypothyroid. I have been really tired all week and just not feeling right.

What was your initial thy ca dx? Mine was papillary carcinoma, stage I, no node involvement. Did yours return? Or just thyroid tissue was still detected?

You're in my thoughts...you are a real trooper!

They did my thyrogen test this year and it came back at a level of 9.1.  Without a thyroid, it should have been less than 2.

I had papillary as well, but I had one lymph node positive. It was the one that is basically connected to the thyroid.

Unfortunately, they don't know if what caused the level was cancerous of just some weird thyroid tissue because healthy and cancerous thyroid cells give off the same stuff.  It was picked up in my ovary so that is the really odd thing.

So, they decided I should repeat the RAI. It was unpleasant. Last year was no picnic either, but this year it was way worse. I felt weird and I looked really weird too so it was kind of scary.

I hated the low iodine diet too. I don't use salt, but I love sauces and dressings so it was a pain!

The weird taste and stuff will get better I promise!

Yeah, the LID diet is healthy though! Had my metabolism not been shutting down, surely I would have lost weight on that diet!
The nuclear med guy told me that they can see it in the ovaries too...did they call it met to the ovaries? He just mentioned that the thyroid tissue can go there.

I was surprised that the RAI was not easier. It was not as bad as chemo, but I sure did have some days where it reminded me of doing chemo...being tired, wacky tastebuds, feeling bleh.... but my eyes got so puffy, I did not look like myself, I think that is finally getting better.

Let's hope this is the last RAI for us both!

They really don't know what to call it. They don't feel that it is anything to worry about, but they may suggest I have my ovary out at some point.

They really don't feel that it would go to my ovaries without having been picked up somewhere else in my neck or even lung first.

So, we shall see. Hopefully we both don't have to worry about anything more!

Dear Lori..Sorry you had a bad week ! I am sure having some side effects that were similar to chemo was not very pleasant. Hopefully that will pass soon ! Hope the taste buds will be back soon...So what now ? Any new plans now that the surgery is finished
