Second Call back On Mammogram and scared

I have been so scared and trying to find info. I hope that you all can help.

I went in for my annual mammogram almost 2 weeks ago and was called back the next morning and told that I needed more pictures and magnified because they saw some microcalcifications, I went back and the rad. tech. did more of her pictures and came back and said that everything looked good and that the calcifications were not to worry about. Okay, I feel better. Then the next day I am called at work and the tech. said that she was sorry but the radiologist sat down and took a good look at my pictures after I left and found a mass on that same breast and it is different and I need to have a ultrasound. I am not scared of the ultrasound but scared that they called me a second time. My question is Should I insist that there be a biopsy or what. I tend to have cystic breast but this one is different.

I am so sorry you have to be here but welcome. If it were me I would demand a biopsy. That way you will know for sure 100% that it is nothing. Come back and let everyone know how you are there are some wonderful woman here. Try hard not to worry yourself sick because it really won't help and 80% of all lumps are NOT cancerous. I will keep you in my prayers that you get only the best news.

Please try to calm your fears.  Like Donna said, 80% of lumps are benign.  I recently had to go back for more testing and films because of heavy microcalicifications found in my normal breast.  Microcalcifications are ususally  caused from many things, but when they cluster together then you really need more testing.  An ultra sound will give you and the docs some answers.  If there is a lump, then biopsy is the only way to get the right answers. Insist on a biopsy.

I would also demand a biopsy right then and there. Dont let them give you the "wait six months" stuff. 

I had a "mass" show up on my mammo and u/s.  I had it biopsied and MRI'd and finally removed my a lumpectomy.  Mine was a benign lesion, but they couldnt tell from just an U/S if I needed to worry or not. 

Just be very proactive.  Yes,you probably dont need to worry since most masses are benign, but waiting longer to see if things change or go away isnt an easy thought.

I had a lump and my mammo came back normal, yet I had cancer.  I went to a breast surgeon right away.  Didn't even follow up with my own doc, just found a breast surgeon on my plan and made an appointment.  I am so glad I did!!!

Mary B. I am wondering if you have had the U/S by now and what was found. If there is a lump, as everyone else has told you, don't let anyone talk you into watching it for six months. A biopsy will tell you if it is benign or cancer, why wait and worry for six months and then have it done? Hugs that you are doing ok. MK

Thanks for caring!! I went yesterday for my US and they found the mass, the DR was very concerned and I had the biopsy done this morning so now I WAIT. I know you all have been there. The DR said that the up side to all this is that it is small, so that is good. Hugs back to you, it really means a lot to know that someone else is thinking of me. Truthfully, the main concern for me right now is my husband and sons. Our youngest is a sen. in HS and I don't want this for him. But, either way I know that we all will be okay,

Mary, my only daughter was a senior in high school when I was dx'd and we got through it. The waiting is the hardest part. When it get's at its worst, go in the car, lock it up and have a good primal scream. It works.

Be sure to keep us informed. If you listen real closely, you can hear us chanting, "B9 B9 B9".

Hi Everyone... I just got a call to come back for more pictures from my routine yearly mammogram.Of course it worries me.. they said they just want some more pictures because there was a change from last year.. That  they usually have 1 -3 call backs every day, but it is scary when it is you.

I have cystic breasts and have been on birth control pills for 4 months since I am in the beginnings of menopause and have heavy periods. I hope that maybe it is something from that.  Please keep my in your prayers... I am of couse worried and am trying not to be.. Thanks to you all...

Boy Tawny this one came up from the archives!!! It is from three years ago! There are more recent discussions in the last week of call backs, I'm surprised that this one popped up in a scan if that is how you found it. Anyhow read all of them and see if you don't get some help with your worries. One thing not discussed is menopausal breast changes. There sure are lots of changes as you get older. The firm breast tissue becomes less firm, that is why all the jokes about older ladies breasts hanging. Birth control is important at that time of life, but I sure hate to see hormones used. Talk to your doctor about different methods. Let us know how the second mammogram works out. Hugs MK

Hi GMA!  Thanks so much for your reply!  I am in the throws of early menopause, so maybe that is it!  I feel better already, tho i know I still have to go thru the next mammogram.

I only took the b/c pills for 4 months to regulate my heavy periods, but I am done with that now.. Maybe that played  a part, too.. I really appreciate your response and will let you know what happens :)  Blessings, Toni

Hi, I'm here in this small town in England and I have the same situation of a call back after a mammogram and scan as some of the contributors. I feel so alone and find that I can't really talk about my fears because I have to be the strong one in my family. I am so scared about the waiting game, even though it's only a week. Just writing this has helped me to relax a little.

Alyj It's nice to see you here.

Know just what you mean. I was fighting Lyme Disease when my doctor ordered a thyroid biopsy with ultrasound becuause it was so enlarged. I also had a mammogram the same day and when the doctor saw the mammogram pictures she asked me to stay for a biopsy with ultrasound. She told me she was sure it was cancer and she was right. The thyroid so far is OK, no cancer, but will check on it every six months.

I don't know what I would have done if I didn't have Healingwell to be able hang out, talk and express my feelings not to mention the expert advice I've gotten.

You are not alone talk about anything you like. everyone understands how you feel.

I also got a callback yesterday and I have such anxiety. The response from my husband when I told him I had anxiety was to "take a pill you f'in b*tch." So the support from home is less than desirable. The radiologist can't get me in for another week and I am constantly on the verge of tears.  I'm 35 with no family history of cancer. It is still unsettling.

My mom goes a clinic here that takes 3 to 4 months to give you an appointment for anything, she had a mammogram earlier this month. Yesterday she was called, they told her they needed to schedule another exam because they had found something. The only thing that worries me is that it isn't til the beginning of February, why so far away? She is 61 and we have no history of cancer in the family at all.

This is the only place I found, related to my situation and I just need some advice or words from people that have or are going through this same scary time.

Madsen, I would not be too concerned about the wait until February.  2 months is not a "make or break" timeframe for breast cancer.  The hardest part is the waiting and not knowing if there is really something there to be worried about.  I have had the same situation.  Even as a breast cancer survivor, I had to wait 6 weeks on a callback for a "mass" in my remaining breast.  It turned out to be nothing... tissue had been compressed in a way that made it look different; compression views six weeks later showed that there was really nothing new or different there.  So please encourage your mom to keep the appointment, but realize that she should really put off the worrying until there is something to worry about.  Lots of callbacks turn out to be nothing... they just want a better picture of a specific area.

I have been reading the post on call backs, I just recently received a call back on my mammogram.  They Found cysts and a mass on both sides.  I am pretty freaked out about the whole thing.  Any encouragement or feedback would be helpful.  My husbands comments were they just want more money, that is the only reason for the call back...yeah no support here!

Donna, I too got a callback today. I missed the call so I will have to call tomorrow to schedule the appt. I'm guessing that they won't be able to tell me much. I am 36 and this was my very first mammogram. I think that my breasts are dense and I'm wondering if that could be the reason. I hate worrying but I always do. I'm sorry that you don't have support! I am praying for both of us that it's nothing.

I am sorry that you also received a call back, I will say a prayer for you also.  Probably because this is your first one and you are so young that they want to be sure they have a good baseline.  This is all such scary stuff!  Keep me posted.

I don't think callbacks are really money-motivated... tell your hubby they make plenty of money without them! Jen, Donna is right about younger women having dense breasts. I was dx'ed at 36 with two types of breast cancer... and my mammogram showed no evidence of cancer. Dense breast tissue shows white, as does cancer, so the density hid the tumors. Fortunately, I had a doctor who insisted on a biopsy anyway. Will be hoping that both donna and jen have clean callbacks. Let us know how it goes.
