9 months after sterotactic biopsy

Well now I'm really confused. In getting my annual physical, my primary Dr. (Which I have only seen once a year) looked at my biopsy site. She felt it and said that it wasn't a hematoma but that it was scar tissue with fatty tissue behind it. Can she really diagnose that just by feeling it? I called the Dr who did the biopsy to ask him about that and he said that it sounds like its a little bit of the hematoma that created the scar tissue and its pressing against the nerve. Does that even sound logical? I'm not due for another month to get the follow up but he said that my pain (which feels like nerve pain most of the time) doesn't happen that often at this point after the biopsy but then said before, that everyone is different in the healing process. So what should I believe....that what I'm still going through is normal or that what I'm going through doesn't happen that often, but has happened?

This is all so frustrating. :-(

Well for what it's worth, even after surgery, my biopsy site hurts, is darker in colour, and is still more sensitive than the surrounding tissue. Fatty lobes can definitely be felt, as well as seen in the contours.

Of course, you'll need diagnostics to be certain.

I'm due Nov 6th for my f/u mammo. We can compare notes!

Mine isn't darker in the area but it is definitely noticeable where both biopsies were. I had the second one done a week after the first because they didn't even get near where they were trying to get to. I'm just wondering if it will be completely healed ever or will the fatty tissue and scar tissue send another red flag to the radiologist and then they'll want to do another biopsy "just to be safe" because they aren't sure what they are seeing you know? I mean, is this a never ending cycle of biopsies now from here on out because of what my previous biopsies have done? I'm almost too nervous to get another mammo because of the radiation because I had soooo many pictures from the first biopsy that was messed up but luckily, the other guy was able to go off my original pictures and didn't have me do more. How long ago did you have your biopsy?

I can understand what you are saying, but at some point we need to weigh out the options about concerns over radiation, and concerns over undiscovered cancer.

I had a core biopsy 1 week ago. Turned out to be PASH. The breast is sore - sort of a light burn and tender. I don't think there is a hematoma as all I feel is the PASH lump (I think). For those who have had a core biopsy, did you have pain a week later? I am icing and talking Tylenol. Thanks for any help. There isn't a site like this that is active for PASH, so I am checking any breasts sites I can find.

What is PASH? I had a core biopsy done 9 weeks ago and still feel discomfort off and on. I did have a hematoma which is a hard lump. You can get an ultrasound done and they can verify if what you have is indeed a hematoma.

Pseudoangiomatous stromal hyperplasia (PASH) - it can be an incidental finding in other rumors, or be its own tumor (that is my situation). It is a well defined rubbery nodule.

Biopsy sight and other areas radiating from it hurt a week out. Not MAJOR pain, but uncomfortable.

You're only a week out from the biopsy. It will take some time from what I have been told. They went in with a needle in a very delicate area and the trauma will take some time to heal. I am 9 weeks out and I know how you feel. I am wanting everything to be healed 8 weeks ago. Give it time. Put moist heat on it. Wear a good support bra (which I didn't do) and take it easy on that side. I know they sometimes say that a few days later that you can return to normal activities but for me that wasn't true. I vacuum now and it can irritate the area. I sleep on that side and the pressure can make it hurt a little. So, just take it easy and if you want peace of mind, ask for an ultrasound to see if you have a hematoma. If you do, expect slow healing! Hope you feel better.

Thanks. I was warned about hematoma, so I will give it a few more days before I call. The way the Dr talked, I figured this was like an injection - needles went in and out, all set to go. It didn't bother me much the first 2 days when I didn't do anything. The I started moving stuff around the house, lifting, etc. perhaps too soon. Bra shopping tomorrow!

Yes good idea. I'm wondering if because I didn't wear the support bra from the start if that has prolonged the healing. Also the fact that I too did things around the house too soon. The ole' saying that you can return to normal activities the next day is not a one healing fit all so to speak. If anything, they should say that everyone is different and also explain the different things that can occur if you do this or that etc...instead of just saying you can return to your normal activities the next day. That's wrong. It took me going out of state to a breast surgeon who works with one of our Dr friends to get some answers which the radiologist should have explained in the first place.

I wish I had been given a bit more info. Like, wearing a sports bra will REALLY help - I didn't wear one at all over the weekend, because the surface of my skin is bugging me. I ended up at GP today because breast clinic is closed and I have a red, warm spot that burns a bit to touch under the needle poke area. She just said to call if it gets bigger and then I can have meds...

Did she not think that there may be an infection? I have heard that red, warm to the touch may be a sign of infection. Not sure how much education they have on that since that's not their "specialty". I'd maybe get a second opinion if it were me or see about getting in with who did your biopsy or get in with a breast surgeon or maybe even a GYN Dr. Someone who specializes in breasts. You can do a search on the internet and see what you find. Hope everything works out for you.
