I recieved a message from Katie today. Its her birthday, she and Shelley were born exactly 6 months apart, and she is hurting. She did not get her dozen or so cards, because Shelley could not pick which one to send. She did not get the phone calls and all the other things best friends all their lives do. I wanted to take a moment not to scare the new ladies, but as we all know, sadly not all of us beat this thing, if we did it would not be scary. I thought it might be nice to take a moment to think of the wonderful people that stand by those that are not so fortunate in their battle and tell them how much we appreciate them. What they go through and how wonderful they are. Its not easy and I think sometimes we need to remember them and what they go through. So to all the Katies in the world, may there always be lots of you and thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Love and hugs and our sincere appreciation of how special you are. Love, and our thanks always, Joyce.........I hope I do not upset anyone with this but thanks for listening, that was something I needed to say.

                                                                                                    She also assures me the flowers were magnificent. She took them home with her b/c she knew that out of ALL the flowers there, those were the ones that made her think of Shelley the most, the delicate pinks, the radiant calla lillys, she assures me that Shelley would have loved it.

Dear Joyce,

I am so thankful that Shelley had Katie as her friend...what a special

relationship they had...I am sure today is very difficult for Katie. I

wish there was something I could do to ease her pain.

How right you are about how important our friends are during this

fight...I know personally how important my sister is and also a few

of my friends (you included)  Being Stage IV with Mets is tough.

But I know how hard it is for those who have to watch us go thru tests and treatments and pain..but they do it with a hug, a card, a funny

story or just a shoulder to cry on...and if you are lucky they dont go running in the other direction....for that I am thankful....I have heard stories of that happening...

Joyce, You have given us all so much to think about....

I thought you said it so well, Joyce. I would only add that we need to stay in touch with those people who are important in our lives on a regular basis, cancer or no cancer. I had a wonderful friend named Susan (not the one we all know from the boards) who went to college with me -- the second time around. After 2 years together at a community college, she continued her education in St. Cloud while I went to the U of MN in Minneapolis. We stayed in touch from time to time, but our lives and careers got busy. She and her husband came to Sarah's wedding in Feb. 2001. That was the last time I saw her. As the months passed, I kept thinking that I needed to call her and meet for lunch so we could catch up. But, I kept putting it off and putting it off. Before I knew it, her DD called to tell me that Susan had had a fatal stroke. At 53, my dear sweet friend was gone, and I can't ever call her up for lunch. I guess what I want people to realize is that at any time any of us or those we care about could be gone. Don't wait to renew connections, restore friendships, reinforce relationships. Good Grief, how you ladies make me think. I sat at the funeral of my childhood friend (since I was 11 y.o. ) on Thursday, the day that my GYN called me for a f/u on my mammo. Marion died of Alzheimers at the age of 57. I cried because I had not seen her through the last two years of her life. Now today, for the first time I realize that I have had no one to go through this with me. During my treatment I was estranged from my family, and as much as I love them, I still do not let them know anything that goes on -- ANYTHING. I sit here now in my chair, on the computer that I could not teach Marion how to use 10 years ago -- and back then I could not understand why -- and I am tearing up realizing that not only did she not shared this experience with me, I did not share the last two years of her life with her -- those years when her family needed me most, and I was not there. Friends are precious and we need to recognize the sacrifices they make for us during these times. For those of us who have someone left to thank, let us do so -- especially this week!

Katie, if you are reading this, please stick around! I corresponded with mothers of 2 of our breast friends (Julie and Susan) for a while after they passed and it was good therapy for us all. We're here for you, Katie!

And Joyce, thanks for bringing this to us and reminding us to give Katie and the Katies an extra giant hug...

{{{Katie}}}, I hope you can feel these hugs we're sending you.  Having a special someone close to you during treatment is absolutely the best medicine.  My DH went to all my treatments and tests with me and my family and friends were there but my "Katie" was my sister, El... someone you can share that look with, things you could do that would make you laugh so hard you can't catch your breath, maybe even have a Depends moment.  I know you had many moments like that with Shells.

Happy birthday, hon... remember all those funny birthdays you shared with Shells.  Those little thoughts that are pushing their way to you today to bring a tear to your eye and a smile to your face are Shells sending her love to you.  I repeat from my last post, that everyone should have "a Katie".

I feel so ashamed. I have had a busy couple of weeks and did not read each and every post until today. What a wonderful thread this is!!! Thank you Joyce for starting it with such a wonderful post to all the Katies in the world!!! I was especially moved and happy to hear that Katie took the flowers we sent home and got full benefit of them. I agree Shelley would have been the first one to agree that was great. I, too, hope you come back, Katie, and let us know how you are getting along and share any news you have of Kalia. Big hugs of thank you and love, MK

Kalia's 3rd birthday party is next saturday....and I just got engaged this week!  Amazing momentous milestones are ahead for both Kali and I...and I know Shel is with us, watching from above!

Congratulations! You deserve the best. I wish you every happiness. Please let me know how the birthday party goes. I just know she will be looking down on it. First belly laugh you hear, you will know she is there. Shelley always said to listen for that and we would know she was there. She said she was the only one that could make her daughter do that. I wish you all the hapiness in life. You have certainly earned it. Love and hugs and best wishes always, Joyce
