I am 34 and I have been called back for a second mammogram, ultrasound and biopsy for a "suspcious" lymph node and mass. My doctor mentioned if the situation (and hopefully it is) is benign I will need annual mammograms. Since I have not had children, and plan to, and this is probably an ignorant question, but will annual mammograms have a bearing on my chances of conception?

I think right now you need to be concentrated on getting the mammogram, US and biopsy. I have never heard of annual mammograms causing any problems as far a fertility goes, but let's see what you are needing today. Please come back and let us know how the tests go. Get copies of results of pathology. Even if you have a benign tumor, some day the lab results could come in handy as part of your history. I like to even keep copies of my blood tests to compare. Really, the conception question is one only a doctor can answer for you. But I agree with MK...first things first. First, take care of the question about the lymph node and mass. Find out what's going on with that, and if all you need is annual mammo's after that, then ask the doc about your conception concerns.

I've never heard of mammograms affecting fertility, although I agree; ask your Dr. I also wanted to let you know about another option in breast screening: Breast Thermography. It uses an infrared camera to take pictures of the breast tissue to determine areas of abnormal heat. Most breast cancer starts to form up to 10 years before a mass can be detected with traditional technology, and thermography can signal an advance warning. Many women are then able to make health or lifestyle changes that can redirect their breast health over time. Be sure to find a Board Certified Thermography Center to make sure that all the protocols of the scan are followed closely.
