I am 43 and have a strong history of breast cancer in my family.  I had my yearly mammo done on Sept. 11th and received a "call back" letter in the mail on Saturday, the 15th.  Needless to say, I'm worried.  I know the odds are in my favor of having bc, and I know that early detection is great but it doesn't take the worry away.  I guess the next step is another mammo.  I'm waiting for my doc to call with my next appointment.  I just want to know what is going on in my body and take care of it.  The not knowing is awful!  This seems like a great site for support and comfort.

Hi Karla,

This is a great site for support. I know the waiting and worry is hard, but try to distract yourself. Just because you have history doesn't mean you have cancer. Do you do self-exams? I know at some point we all get a "call-back" but most of the time it is nothing. Can I suggest asking for an ultr-sound if they don't?

Stay calm until you get the appt.. In my opinion if they felt it was something dangerous they would get you in sooner..that is what they did with me.

My thoughts are with you and again...try and stay busy.

It is a good thing that you are staying on top of this! They will probably call you back for additonal views and an u/s. There are new recommendations for screening "high risk" breast cancer patients that include MRI if nothing shows up on the mammo or u/s. Young women have dense breast tissue and mammo and u/s can miss things. I was in a similar situation eight years ago; my mother and sister both had bc. I know that feeling in your gut that it is "just a matter of time". Make sure you follow up on this, because you are right, early detection saves lives! Good luck! FK

Thank you Eve and FK for your reply.  It is some comfort knowing that there are caring people out there.  My next apt. is Sept. 28th and they are going to do a spot compression and ultrasound.  My doctor told me they found a dense mass on my right breast and a spot below my left nipple.  I do self exams and don't feel a thing.  My worries have subsided some and whatever this is, I will hit it straight on.  Thanks again for your replies and comments.  They are greatly appreciated.  :-)
