A sunken depression on my right breast???

Hello,
I usually can be found in ADHD but I have a question. A little history, I am 31 and have been post menopausal for 10 years now. I never carried a child to term and I smoke. I know it is bad. My husband's step father a few years ago lost his wife to BC and made it his mission in life to get out the word on early prevention. When he met me he told me to always do a self exam at least once a month and to be familiar with my breasts, and he gave me a shower card. I listened. The problem is last night I was getting ready for my shower when I was taking off my shirt and my arms were raised I looked at my breasts. My right breast had a large sunken depression just below a large lump. I got in the shower and did my exam and panic started to set in. I had my husband see the depression and feel to see if he thought it was a lump. He told me he wants me to go to the doctor. Is this normal? I am too scared to think entirely straight.

Hello Melissa! First, cudos to your fil and to you for listening. It is so important, no matter what age you are, to do the sbe. Okay, now take a deep breath and try and relax.

I don't know if there is anything to worry about but I do agree w/ your husband. Please call you physician first thing and get an appointment. Have you had a mammogram before? I was asking because of your age. If your physician tries to tell you that there is nothing to worry about, I would strongly suggest telling him that you would like to decide that yourself after an exam and a mammo. If he still doesn't want to see you, then call your obgyn or another physician. It is always better to error on the safe side.

Please keep us updated and don't hesitate to post if you have any other questions.

Ditto to Deb's note.....very good chance it is a big old nothing, but just in case....it is best to have it checked out. That is the key, knowing your breast 'landscape' and knowing when it changes. My advice, besides getting to a doctor, is do not let them brush you off just becuase you are 31 and "too young". Most likely you are too young, but age is no guarantee. Many of us were younger than the norm when diagnosed...it can happen, less often, but it does.

We all know how scared you are, we have been there. Try to focus on one step at a time and try not to worry till you know you have something to worry about. We're all here for you.

Ditto, get thee to a doctor. Don't worry until you know you have something to worry about is my favorite saying. But be proactive and take care of yourself. If there is a lump there, they should be able to see it on a mammogram or sonogram. And the only way to know for sure what it is is a biopsy. I had a benign lump in my late 20s and again in my early 40s before I was ever diagnosed. All lumps are not cancer, but all lumps need to be checked out. Let us know what you learn. We care. Hugs, MK

Ditto, ditto and ditto once again. The only way to know for sure is to start with a visit to your dr. I'd urge you not to let any dr. tell you that you're too young to have BC. Be strong, but persistent in voicing your concerns. If you encounter "deaf ears", go on to another physician. It's your life, your body and your peace of mind that's impt. here.

In the meantime you'll be in my thoughts and prayers. Luci

Melissa! WTG!!! I am glad that you got an appointment so quickly. Remember, try and not worry. Get some sleep if you can. Be sure and take someone w/ you tomorrow. It will help you stay calm. Let us know what you find out.

Okay, still breathing. I went to see my doctor and he did the exam. He said I do indeed have a lump, there are changes in my breast and he did not believe it to be a fibroid. He is sending me to get a mammogram and ultrasound and he wants me to see a breast specialist. He said he was concerned with the puckering of my skin and changes to the nipple. He was very kind and thorough. I guess I will find out the when and wheres on Monday. What a Friday the 13th. I know it doesn't help to panic, I am scared though.

Good for your doctor, he sounds like a real keeper sending you to a breast specialist. Try to relax over the weekend, see a funny movie or video and do things to keep your mind off the "what if's". Big hugs and prayers that all will be well. MK

Stay calm this week-end.  Remember 80% of all lumps are b/9.  MK is right your doc is a keeper.  Keep us posted.  We are here for you no matter what happens.

Melissa,

I am so glad your doctor is taking this seriously but I sure hope it is NOT serious! I had doctors give me the brush off until one finally thought to do a mammogram, since I was only 34.

I will be keeping my fingers crossed that it turns out to be benign for you! I'd suggest the old Ben and Jerry's therapy for now (love that ice cream!).
