Dry, chapped lips

Hi, I am new to this CFS forum.  Does anyone else have a constant problem with their mouth being dry.  And my lips are always dry & chapped.  If I can't find any of my chap sticks anywhere I will almost panic.  It is very uncomfortable, I always find myself picking at my lips to get the dry skin off.  It has become such a habit that I find myself doing this at the oddest times & embarrass myself. blush Does anyone have a good product they have tried? or good brand of sandpaper I could use?  LOL

I use Carmex - the kind in the little jar that you smooth on with your finger. I keep it in my pocket, my desk drawer, everywhere I go.

yes i have dry lips, but im on anti-depressants and a side effect of them is a lack of saliva. i always get cracks at the sides of my mouth when im really run down, or fighting a virus. i too use carmex. its good stuff.

Hi,

 

What I use may sound crazy but it has worked wonders for me  is vicks.  I put it on my lips at night and in the morning my lips are smooth, i use this most every night thru the winter.

 

I use to use carmex also but my Dr. said that is for cold sores and the more you use it the more you need it, but if it work for you go with it.

 

I hope that you find something that helps as i know how bad and painful your lips can be.

Oh yes denise youre not alone. My problem is aggrivated by the lack of saliva due to amitryptiline side effect. But it is an abosolute nightmare. I even get angular colitis, causing the sides of my mouth to dry and split.

i know my little remedy sounds even more bizzare but hair serum works wonders.

Aquaphor is amazing at controlling dry lips.  Do you have dry eye as well?  You might contact your dr. He can supply you with treatmets for these conditions.  Sjourns is also a cute little addition to Fibr/CFS which can cause dry eye,mouth and nose.  Check it out with your dr. He can help.

Thank you all for the replies, I will try each these remedies.  I just hate having a dry mouth & lips all the time.  My lips are always cracking & bleeding too.  I don't know if this is a side affect of my prescriptions or not.  I will check with my Pharmacist on that.  Don't know why I didn't think to ask him before!!! rolleyes   I do have dry eyes as well.  I had to stop wearing my contacts because they stuck to my eyes.  Such wonderful & ever changing symptoms just keep my life interesting!! 

I also get lots of canker sores, mouth ulsars & fever blisters.  Do you guys have to deals with these?  Are they part of ME/CFS?  Thanks again for your replies, hugs, Denise

Hello. I feel your pain cry I have the same problem. I have CFS/Fibromyalgia/Lyme and if I don't have chap stick I start freaking out! I have tired a bunch of different kinds. Most of them suck. There is one that is hands down the best of the best. Coming from a fellow chapstick addict your gonna have to trust me! You will LOVE IT!

You use to be able to buy it in wallmart. They no longer carry it and I have to buy it online.

Second to that is Burts Bees Lip Balm
You can buy it in most stores like wallmart. I would try the Natural Ice thought.

well, thank you, I will try it.  There is nothing worse then dry, chapped lips when you want to smile.  LOL.  I even have to stop & think before I do smile, "will my lip crack & bleed or do I have chap stick on?"  Such a bummer.  Kinda ruins the spontonaity (sp) of smiling.    hugs, Denise

What works for my dry, itchy lips is Lansinoh cream (pure lanolin) and 1% hydrocortisone ointment, mixed together in the palm of my hand. You must be sure to get hydrocortisone ointment, not cream because the ointment contains only hydrocortisone and petrolatum. Avoiding irritants on the lips is very important -- the reason products like Blistex sting when applied is that they contain ingredients like menthol and camphor which are the worst things possible for skin. My dermotologist said I have cheilitis and prescribed the hydrocortisone ointment. I used it for two weeks before my follow up appt. The derm was looking at me strangely and asked why my lips were white? I said it's from the ointment you've had me using for two weeks! It's embarassing!!! Come to find out, the pharmacy had messed up and given me the cream instead of the ointment and I didn't know the difference. It dried my lips out sooo severely!!! Once I got on the actual ointment my lips were alright but not enough for me to say it was a success.

I've had it since I was younger than my teens and the one and only thing that has actually made any difference on my lips is a cheap little chapstick tube called Aquafina. It contains Jojoba Oil, Almond Oil and Vitamin E. It feels minty and tingly on the lips.

I use a mild exfoliator (usually sugar and something emoilient like Vaseline or Olive Oil) at night then slather the Aquafina on and go to bed. It's a constant struggle for me. I cannot wear lipstick at all (dries my lips even more) and I have to stay away from lip glosses with larger pieces of glitter...they get under the flakes and make them gross! I keep my Aquafina next to the bed, on the coffee table, my desk, my purse and even in my pocket or bra if I don't have pockets. I really despise having cheilitis.
