I've been living with CFS for going on 15 years, and despite some pretty low points, I am in a pretty good place right now. However, I recently had an accident involving my two front teeth which left them severely cracked/chipped, and my dentist is recommending getting porcelain veneers. I am young and don't want to live the rest of my life being self-conscious of my smile, but I also don't want to jeopardize my health for what essentially amount to cosmetic surgery.

The procedure sounds pretty "safe," (I will avoid all anesthesia), but I'm wondering if anyone has or knows someone with CFS/Fibromyalgia who has had any adverse reactions from a similar dental procedure. I myself am pretty sensitive to any kind of drug/chemical, (I credit my relatively-speaking good health to the avoidance of such things), and so I'm concerned that I could have a reaction to the cement bonding agent, etc.? As I'm sure you all know, My dentist can sympathize with, but not truly understand, my concerns.

Any advice/input would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Hi, probably not very useful info for you but i'm curious about the effects of dental treatment too, i have suddenly got much worse than i've been in years and the 'worse' phase began around the time i had dental work done, an old filling was taken out and new ones put in and i've since heard things about allergies to dental metals etc.

just thought i'd reply even tho i dont really have an answer to your problem.

Mercury fillings are bad news but your dentist shouldnt use anything like that these days. I need to get my fillings replaces with ceramic really but its expensive.

I've had multiple root canals, gold crowns, and tons of dental proceedures with fibro/CFS. Your veneer thing is a walk in the park next to those. Go for it!!! It isn't just cosmetic surgery, either. If you don't have the veneers put on you could develop abscesses in the affected teeth very easily. Cracked teeth are breeding grounds for the bacteria that cause this. By having the veneers added you will be protecting the teeth from future breakage which could lead to tooth loss.

Another thing to remember is that the blood supply that goes to your teeth is also the one that supplies your brain. It isn't common but it is possible to develop encephalitis from a tooth abscess. I would definitely recommend the veneers. The improvement in your self-image from this repair is just icing on the cake compared to the contribution this will make to your future general health.
