weird hydrocodone effect

Sorry about your awful experience. It might have just been some sort of intestinal 'bug' you had and not the hydro at all. When you get sick your body eliminates anything in the stomach so it can fight the 'bug'...and maybe it just happened after you took your medication.

It may have nothing at all to do with the Hydrocodone itself.

One thing few docs acknowledge (and almost as few even realize) is that virtually no two pain medication formulations by two different manufacturers are really the same. They may have within 5% the identical amount of active ingredient, but in order to get around other companies' patents and such, most generics in particular are formulated with less than ideal chemistry.

Mallinkart generic "lortabs" (5/ or 10/500 generally) were some of the worst in this regard for me. It just seemed like the pills were formulated with something that my body didn't like at all. A disgusting taste was definitely part of this.

I think that your vomiting incident, while it *COULD* have been at least partly opiate-related......was more likely a matter of bad timing, something in your stomach that wouldn't have ordinarily been any problem but which "triggered" the vomiting reflex once you were exposed to something else (the opiates and/or pill formulations). Tracking down a single, clear cause of vomiting incidents can be darn tricky, as I have learned over the past two years as my condition has progressed to include chronic nausea & vomiting -- which has recently, blessedly been brought under control with Marinol and Medicinal Marijuana (but that's a long story for a thread more specific to the wonders of Cannabinoids).

I would say that you should be very cautious about taking more tablets by this manufacturer, particular if it isn't a company whose formulation you've taken before. It may, as I said before, not really be about the Hydrocodone itself at all, though that is definitely still a possibility.

I would suggest making sure that you have an ample supply of Promethazine suppositories for the future, just in case you ever have such an incident again; even though you are tapering off of opiates, IMHO it is always wise to have a potent anti-emetic available in a suppository form.

It's odd that you didn't respond to Zofran; that's an extremely powerful anti-emetic. Combined with Promethazine, virtually any "normal" source of vomiting should be completely resolved. I have to believe that there were other factors at work, complicating the obvious ones like the hydrocodone itself and/or pill formulation. Maybe something you ate?!

Thanks for the Replies. I decided to not taper off the methadone right now and threw away the bottle of hydrocodone. It was the watson brand. I tried taking half a dose and still got that nausea (w/no vomiting) and that horrible taste in my mouth. I really think It has something to do with all my stomach problems. I had gallstones at 14 (im 24 now)and gallbladder removed when I was 15, then very shortly after when I kept still having the same pains as gallstones they found out I had pancreatitas which was due to a deformality of my pancreas. I have had so many problems with my stomach that I had a GI doctor tell me when I was 17 years old that I had 9 things wrong with my digestive system. Well that doctor is gone and I went to a new GI doctor that was 3 hours away from where I lived that did a colonoscopy(year and half ago) with no drugs to calm or sedate me. I was so traumatized by this that I refuse to ever have a procedure or any surgeries done to me again, I dont care if I'm dying, I now have a big phobia of them. They said they couldnt give me meds cause I was taking the fentanyl patch at the time and they said they didnt need to give me any other meds. So I dont know what to do about my nausea and vomiting, it gets so bad that it throws me into a severe depression. It took me 3 months to get over the colonoscopy, I had vomiting and a horrible migraines. And I know your thinking I should of sued them or something but I thought that was normal til a few months ago when I started overhearing other people talking about their's and they all said they didnt feel a thing, I laid there screaming and crying and holding on the side of the hospital bed while the doctor was doing it, and he didnt care. Well now I dont know what to take for a BT med. I just think its so strange that I could have gotten sick from a med I've taken a thousand times before with no side effects, and suddenly it's like my body decided to change it's mind now what I can and canot take and I have no doctor to even tell me if there is still something wrong with my stomach like my pancreas acting up again, I guess I'll never know what caused that horrible night.
