This past weekend I developed an ear infection and my doctor is not opened so I went to a walk in clinic. In their front window they have a big yellow sign, "This is a narcotic free office". I can understand this because I guess they may get allot of attics wanting narcotics for the wrong reasons. However, this is what I found offensive, on the window in front of the receptionist they had about four or five articles cut out from news papers. One was on a teenager who died from Oxycontin overdose, another was on the lawsuit that was won against the maker of Oxycontin in the US... On the articles they had written with marker, "Oxycontin is not prescribed here for these reasons".
As I mentioned before Oxycontin has litterly saved my life. It has given me back quality of life. Before the drug I could not ever watch TV without the pain being uncontrollable. At least now I can think and not have the pain always at the front of my thinking.
Why do they think these drugs are made?
I live in Canada and I wonder if there is anywhere that I can complain about this, I.e. College of Physicians. They just went to far Oxycontin is a legal drug and they are giving everyone who reads their postings the wrong idea.

If this is a walk in clinic then they have no business prescribing narcotics. The walk in clinics that I have been to certainly won't because they are likely to see a peron only once and they don't have previous medical records.
However, I agree that posting all of those articles is going to far. The sign saying they don't prescribe narcotics would be sufficient.

Gramps, this is a medical clinic that alot of people here in Canada use as their primary care, it is not a drug store clinic. Unfortunately we have a shortage of doctors in my area and I am sure they would get people in pain there. It really scares me because my doctor that prescribes my pain meds is close to retirement. I have heard that the family doctors around here will not take any new patient with a chronic condition. You can see the spot I would be in. In Canada we have the public system so it is a different ball game than the US. I don't go to a pain specialist on an ongoing basis. My family doc sent me once at the request of workers comp. and the pain doc made recommendations that my doc followed. It's a good system but because you can go to the doc with any little problem, at no cost, there is never enough doctors.

Anyhow. I think you should write a letter to the sdministration of the clinic. Every clinic and center has administration. In that adm. there is someone in charge of making sure they keep getting patients and that those patients are happy and satisfied. Putting those articles up is not only reckless to those who are in need to pain management to treat the DISEASE of chronic pain, but makes them look very un-professional. There is no harm in writting an anonymous(or not so anonymous) letter telling them that they look un professional and are activly adding to the problem. Tell them you understand there stance on not perscribing narcotics, but posting negative articles about medications that benefit so many is not okay as a medical clinic. The person in charge of keeping the place open and filled with patients would hate to hear even from one person that there is any sort of problem.
I dont know if Canada is different with buisness administaration but there is no harm in finding out who is at the top and expressing your feelings about it to them.

I live in Canada Ontario in particular,and the walk in clinic here is used as people's primary care due to Dr' shortage's hear the one by me has those sticker's also and although no artical's posted this place has a different Dr' every day I think they work their part time for the money and they do NOT no matter what perscribe any pain or narcotic med's period and that is the way it is comming up here Dr.s do not want to treat pain patient's because to treat it properly require's pain medication and I have personally been told NO and we do not seem to have those "Pain Clinic" you have in the state's at least I have never found them and the one;s that call themselve's these "Sports Medicine rehab" that are here do only shot's' Physical therapy, water therapy and anti inflamitories ned's that's it they say it is "up to you " to get better and control your own pain by the effort you put in really that is what I was told and I payed them out of my insurance to have a teenager PT tell me that.

Up here on A and E channel 31 their is a show called Intervention a show about peoples addictions and a attemp to gt them off it

Well last night their was this individual that crushe's up and inject's Oxycontin more than 17 time's per day they showed this person and his friend's do this activity on camera all of it I could NOT believe what I was seeing this person do with the medication that has given and saved my life completely flabergasted and just made me furious as this person was laughing and wanted sympathy and blamed the drug for this unbelievable he dose this over 17 time's per day him and his friend's and get's money for it from his mother and she know's all about what he dose

Now after putting this activity on prime time tv It sorta become's understandable why up here they are not perscribing Oxycontin and I am sorry to say I feel it is only the start and it is going to get alot worse I mean I had NO zero sympathy for this creep he made me furious doing this and I turned to my wife ant told her that is why people are not getting this drug who desperatly need it I know all about addiction's and alchole addiction being a disease and it is but this individual doing this 17 plus times every day just made me sick we saw him crushing and ingecting the exact same Mg pill's I take and he dose it 17 time's every day

Anyway I have at one point or another tried most of the common pain med's up here methadone included some at pretty high dose's over the year's and Oxycontin is the Only med that work's for me with stability and without ever increasing dose's and this med has really saved alot of peoples live's and to see it getting betten down to the point I am even ashamed to tell people I take it because of what it has been associated with not only make's me very very sad it also make's me furiou's and I fear I will not be able to obtain it anymore then my life will most likely be in jepordy without it

Probably the change in treating cp in Canada is related to the same reason in the states - illegal use of prescription drugs. Really, we should be more angry with those who sell the drugs, as they're the ones making a ton of money, and maintaining the supply for addicts. In some ways I can't blame law enforcement, but there's got to be a better middle ground so that those of us with legitimate cp are differentiated from addicts. Sadly, I don't see anything changing for the better in the near future. Or even for the long haul.

There is something we can do. We can start with ourselves making sure we never use the medicine in any other way than the doc says to,. We can make sure if anyone approaches us at our pain management clinic about selling meds or anything of that nature that you tell your doc asap. You can make sure that the police are notified of anyone hanging out around your pharmacy trying to either gets meds or selling them. The answere isnt to stop the police from sticking there nose in, its to make sure they get the people that are giving all of us a bad name. We can right letters to our government every time we are treated unfailrly or write to the clinics or docs administration when we are treated in a way that is unethical. I in no way like that our society has turned on those with CP and the meds we have to use. But there will always be someone trying to score drugs or sell drugs. All we can do is try and make it better for ourselves and eachother by showing the docs and law that a huge majority of CP patients dont abuse or sell there meds. Thats why the law is involved, in there eyes we ALL abuse and sell our meds. There side of the story is that they just need to prove it. Docs have reacted to this by turning those in need away or cuyying down how much and what they perscribe. I think in the future it will change. Too many of us are trying to change it and change cant be held back if there are people pushing it forward.
I know this sounds so 7th heaven, but I still believe it wont be like this for us forever.

I am in Ontario also and I saw the show you are talking about Bob .I watch it all the time RATHER I did up to that last one on the Oxy's
Luckily for me I have a family doc that has my pain mgmt in his control and for him it then has to be a schedule 2 form and so on and Limited use form every year ..alot of really double talking gov paperwork for him but for me and his other patients he will not see nor let them be in pain.....

Yes those out buying these sure do make it alot worse for all I totally agree but that will never end anytime soon...NOR will those that are willing to go and get the RX and sell them to those that do not need then ya know....Viciuos circle.MINE are in a lockbox in my room had some stolen by DIL once and will not have it happen again.......made a police report and my doc gave me a Replacement RX for the amount taken ** he has police report in my file **
My Dil gets hers and is done a months plus 15 for PRN in less than 2 weeks and my son and gb's suffer the wrath of her coming off and thru withdrawels ........it is a horrid scene all around I WILL not give her an aspirin.....not being mean just will not be an enabler to her ya know

Gramps yes it is sad the way our Country is going with healthcare and especially tx CP'ers and seniors IMHO.........they are trying to attract new docs and teach them about Chronic Pain and what to do but it is not working too great so far
We have walk in clinics all over Ontario...I honestly believe that none of them do give out Narcotics but am not 100% positive there may be the odd one way out in the boonies or something
Definitely something has to change .IMHO
