I just found out that starting on 1/29/08

There will be new strengths of Oxycontin available 15mg, 30mg, 60mg in addition to the others.

However, I imagine it will still be awhile before most pharmacies carry them.

Hi,

Thanks for the info.  I don't usually post here but do read many.  I post on the RA site and have been dealing with chronic pain for about 3 years.  My meds are listed below.  My MD has recently increased my dose of oxycontin to 40mg q 12 hours but I find that with three kids its too much.  I am staying with 20mg q 12 hours for now and was thinking of  talking to him about either something for breakthrough or a different dose of the oxy.  I think the 30mg would be good for me. 

I have pain in most major joints from the RA as well I have been a diabetic for many years and have severe neuropathy.  I've tried the Lyrica as well as Gabapentin, Tegretol and a few other of the anti-seizure meds they use for nerve pain but get lots of headaches-actually with the Tegretol I had a continuous headache for aboiut a month before we figured out what was causing it. 

Anyway, I've been in pain way too long and really want to be able to have some sort of quality of life.  The Diagnosis of RA has definetely changed my life but i will keep hoping that we will be able to find the right combination of meds and whatever else that will work for me.  Any suggestions would be welcomed and appreciated.

what i have heard, Quahog, is that those are acutally not new, they have been available from Purdue as the brand Oxycontin for a couple of years now. It's just new that the Teva generic Oxycodone ER are off the market as of the 29th and you may now be able to get coverage for the brand.....don't be too sure though, because the situation with MaineCare (if you're still on it) is very weird. They won't pay for the brand unless you had at least one PA granted for it (the brand type) prior to last June......weird.

I am currently switching to Methadone, with great results (the oxycontin, at least in the max dosage mainecare would pay for, never adequately controlled my severe pain).....I just hope that I can get an appropriate breakthrough medication, such as Fentora or Actiq, to go with it; I'm a bit concerned that at higher doses of methadone, my current dose of hydromorphone (dilaudid) won't be effective for breakthrough anymore.

Hey Quahog, I've been meaning to ask you.....do you attend the bi-weekly Chronic Pain Support Group at Midcoast Hospital in Brunswick (run by a Nurse Practicioner from Medical Rehabilitation Associates)?! I have been attending for the past two meetings and always wondered if you were one of the people there, or if you had ever attended in the past.....it would be great to meet you in person if I haven't already!

Actually I do get the brand name and have been doing so for years as my insurance (Not Mainecare) covers the brand name. The generic versions were terrible and I had all sorts of problems.

I spoke with Purdue Pharma recently and while they did have the patent for these they did not manufacture them for sale in the US. That is until now.

As for the support group no I don't attend. Brunswick is a bit of a drive for me. Although I do use MRA just not the Brunswick facility.

Hi There!

The new dosages were posted on this forum on 1/29/08. I don't know why the other post has a March date, since the new dosages have been available for a couple of months now. Weird.

I do apologize for any confusion but I recently updated my original post.

I was told that Oxycontin would come in a 5mg strength but upon further investigation it appears that it will not be available in the USA.

I think shortcake may be referring to my posts of additional strengths of Opana and OxyContin. I posted them from a Monthly Prescribing Index that I get (same one doctors use)....and I guess this explains why our doctors don't always know everything we do.....the info on new dosages weren't given to them until March.

Raven, until you can get set up with a BT med that works well for you, or a 30mg tablet, you could consider taking the 20mg q 8h instead. Essentially, this would be the same as 30mgs q 12h.

Thanks Keah,

I'll be speaking to my Rheumy about options in a few weeks.  I am learning though that pain is such a personal thing.  Some with the same condition have considerably less pain that I do and that goes the other way as well, other have more. 

My Rheumy is not particularly keen on RX narcotics, but I've tried everything else and so far it's the only thing that gives me some relief.
