I almost died

Last month I accidently overdosed on my morphine. i had taken a dose and forgotten and took another. I was life flighed to a major hospital. I was told that when I arrived that I had no vital signs. I was on life support for over two daya and in ICU for over a week. I spent a month in the hospital. I suffered brain damage because I inhaled vomit into my luings ad now I am suffereing from kidney failure. I have a doctors appointment in a week and the hospital faxed my doctor my med records. I was told no doctor will prescribe opites asfter this happened. What are pain killler that isn't an opiate that the doctor will most likely prescribe me. because  I cannot stand the thought of being in pain

I have a Sidekick cell phone and it has a program where I can type in notes, and in that program I write down all the meds I have taken and at what time, and how much, so that when I am trying to remember if I have taken a medication or not, I look at my Sidekick and I know if I did or not. It helps a lot.

I, too, am glad you survived your ordeal. And you're right, it should be a lesson to others just how much harm even one extra pill might do - especially if it's a longer acting med.

If it was a one time accident, perhaps - perhaps - over time you may be able to rebuild trust with a doctor enough that they'll prescribe some opiates, but I suspect some shorter-acting ones, and in small doses to start. But if you take those extra pills, as you're doing now, and something should happen - even if for some reason a urine screen was done - and that was found in your system you'd likely never get a doc to prescribe opiates again.

I don't know if the doc would be willing to risk your husband keeping charge of your meds. I kind of doubt it. You already know firsthand what the risks are of an accidental overdose, and no doctor is going to want to risk being the one who prescribed when you end up in the E.R. the next time. I think you need to have a talk with your doc about what meds are even possible for you without doing harm, especially in light of the kidney failure. If this one a one-time accidnt, I'd try to talk with the doctor(s) I had the best relationship with, and ask about my options, and go from there. Is a patch a possibility?

I totally agree with you post. I would check into a pain clinic, try the patch. Now I have been told that if you suggest a med to your doctor that their BACKS GO UP! I am not savvy enough to skirt around this issue. I am making a list for my Doctors appt tomorrow and each time I a new entry I cry, I am only on #8. LOL How pathetic I am these days.

I take it Skeeter Bug that you are not in the acute stages but in the chronic? So I was told that epidural shots. If you go to a pain clinic ask them what is available non-narc /non opiate, in my opinion of guess they will work with you. As for giving your husband your meds, just another option, keep your pills in a med minder. As for taking Advil I would be VERY carefully, as PaLady mentions above. As soon as I went off Narcs I started taking anvil and this is when I became incontinent and now I ware a pad 24/7. It is always redish brown stained when I change it, but I have to keep taking it. Tylenol arthritis works good to, but that goes through your liver, if I recall correctly. These are only suggestions for you to research.

Skeeter if you are in the chronic stages I was told no for the shot.
I used the patch with great success for 3.5 years, I slept a lot and the last 6 months approx I had weekly migraines. I would mark my calendar with detailed changes. Like... patch 1 right shoulder then 3 days later patch 2 left shoulder...... I see your DX above and you are diabetic, I would not take any Advil for a chronic condition, Just my opinion. My brother has juvenile diabetes and went into renal failure, a family member donated their kidney so he lucked out with a live family member donor. I if recall correctly he has been advised not to take any by his specialists. I have been taking Advil for awhile and my condition has worsened. FYI

There may be another reason, aside from the overdose that your doctors won't want to prescribe any more narcotics. With the brain damage, the damage to your lungs, and the kidney failure, your body may not be able to tolerate the side effects from the narcotics any more.

As far as you taking any morphine that you have at home, after a month in the hospital, I'm pretty sure that your body has gone through withdrawal of the narcotics while you were there, and by taking it now, you are going to throw yourself back into withdrawal if you continue to take it.

I would strongly suggest that you don't take any more and get rid of what you do have at home instead of taking it. Contact your doctors and ask them what you can take for pain aside from the morphine. With all of your medical problems now, you don't want to make any more medical crisises for yourself.

Skeeter, You can use a med minder as well, if you want to. I just got back from a doctors appoinment. I was there for two hours! UA done and blood in my urine, do to Advil use(which I knew). I got a real long explanation as to just how many drug seekers that are out there. My doctor said you would not believe the excuses he hears. My dog ate them, my purse got stolen, I went to my brothers and forgot to bring them home. Blah blah blah.......... I have on my medical records that I got fired from a pain clinic(Who have zero tolerance) This is in my records and they request all your medical records before they choose to treat you or not. I have this in my records for life.
My doctor is referring me to another pain clinic and he did give me Hydrocodone and flexeral. I go back in 3 weeks to see him. I might hear from them before then if my blood culture shows signs of poor kidney function. Doctor told me no more Advil.
