Pharmacy mistake

Well, I'm glad for your sake that the mistake wasn't in the other direction (not enough pills!). I sure can understand the urge to want to store them for the winter, so to speak, like a squirrel stashes nuts, espeically after what happened to me last week, but you're right you're best to tell them. They should detect the error later anyway, via computer inventory.

Wow, kttn, that is a huge mistake! When I first started taking significant amounts of pain meds, my doctor told me to be sure that I always check & counted all my meds when I got them. I usually go to the car to do this (unless it is dark out, then I wait until I get home), because I really don't want to do it in the store, since I get enough evil looks as it is, but I always worry that if they make a mistake (I'm referring to giving me less pills that prescribed), are they going to give me problems if I go back into the store to tell them. Would they think that they gave me the correct number & I just took a few pills out so I could get extra? I wouldn't worry about this so much with a non-controlled substance, but so we are so often treated like addicts, I'm afraid that they would give me a real hard time. It's so awful that we have to worry about things like this.

But I really can't believe that they gave you THAT much extra! Granted pharmacists are human, and they make mistakes from time to time, but someone's mind really must have been off on another world! You definitely do need to return them. Hopefully they'll give you some credit for being so honest, as I'm sure there are people out there who would keep them & would not even feel guilty.

And sorry to hear about your allergic reaction! I'm allergic to amino-glycoside class antibiotics (ex: neomysin), and after my last eye surgery my doc put me on eye drops that were a combination of a steroid & tobramysin (which is one of the drugs I'm allergic to). Well, I was pretty out of it after the surgery & so I didn't read the name of the drops until the following day, I just used them as instructed. I never dreamed that he would have given me something I'm allergic to, since it says all over my chart, as well as on the allergy wrist-band that I had to wear during the surgery, that I'm allergic to neomysin (and any doctor should have immediately realized that I'm also allergic to tobramysin, gentamysin, etc). When I saw my doc the following day to have my eye placement adjusted, my eye was pretty well swollen shut & bright red from bleeding into my eye caused by the swelling. It took me several weeks just to recover from the external swelling caused by the allergic reaction alone, and another several months to get rid of the severe iritis and subsequent eye pressure issues that it exhaserbated (I had finally mostly recovered from the several months of iritis that was induced by the trauma, just prior to the surgery)!

I remember reading another post about someone having this happen before too. But what I remember most was that they got a letter from the pharmacist stating what had happened. I can't recall if they had brought a letter in and asked the pharmacist to sign it or if they'd asked the pharmacist to write one when they called to report the error and say they'd be bringing in the meds, but I thought it was a wise idea. It would be a signed "waiver of liability" for you if there should happen to be any question over the matter in the future. You would hope there would never be any record of this on your account, but if they can make a mistake this serious then you have to wonder about their bookkeeping too!

I got shorted 4 pills one time on a norco prescritption and went back right away and you would have thought I accused them of murder!!! The pharmacist who filled the script was saying I remember filling that and I was sure I counted right!! I was like would I make a fuss over 4 pills if I was just trying to scam extra?????? sheesh like an hour later they gave me the 4 pills but made me feel like some drug addict in front of all the other customers. This was by the way a new guy and we have since then become friends but I told him later how bad he made me feel and he apologized over and over and admitted that because he was new there he specially didnt want to admit his mistake and look bad in front of his new employers.

 I got extras once, in fact 100 oxys, i kept them for those days i needed to double up to start the day and get on my feet. The reason i kept them is basically a follow up from another recent post on obnoxious, rude young pharms. I watched him fill the script as i sat their checking my blood pressure in those complimentry units. He was one in fact who chimed in on the quantity i was prescribed to take daily and made a Wow remark, i only take four daily, no big deal to me but was to him. So....i see him filling the plastic bottle and did a Wow my self, like man thats alot of pills. And im the one who got them. If a person was to get in trouble when the pill count is tabulated at the end of the week...month, his name would be on record for distrubution and the mistake his. If they wanted them back, id glady given them back for a clean slate but nothing ever came of it on my part, but low and behold, he is no longer there behind the counter. Matter of fact, they are there to perform the required duties of their job, they supply the needed medications that the DOCTOR recommened and prescribed, they distribute a product. They should be knowledgable of the products, drug interactions etc. But by no means play doctor or make rude or questionable comments that we take very serious. This happened six months ago or so when i was dealt extras, i still have some and glad i do. My pain management doctor was informed of the incident and does not have a problem with it. He suggested doubleing up and when i run out of the extras, he will increase the amount to allow me to do that when those really bad days come around.

Well, I have debated on posting this but here it is. This forum speaks of being honest as a high priorty because what we go thru as pain patients. What happened here? Only myself and another person said call the pharmacy and tell them what happened. I am disappointed. This same thing happened to one of our posters recently and everyone said "oh call them ASAP & and call your dr & let him know what happened". Then the thread went on about honesty and yada yada. This person promptly did make the calls and it made her look even more credible for her honesty, which this person had always been the perfect pain patient. Kttn said she was giving them back and I hope she did so so there is no backlash from her drs.

Hey guys, thanks for all the wonderful input. Seems as if we are all in agreeance to take them back. I will do it tomorrow, I am under down with some kind of awful flu. I can only assume I got it from the ER. Its been projectile its bkoeen so bad. I hope none of you guys get it. Anyhow, back to the topic at hand, seems as if a lot of us have had somform of a mistake. Hopefully none that have proven fatal on a loved one. I have had a few instances myself where I was shorted here & there. I try to always go to the same pharmacist, late, late at night (past Conan O'Brien) because a) there are very few, if any, people there & b) he knows me & will fill early if needed (like going out of town) & c) they are filled in like minutes or less & all correct. And I don't feel so guilty buying turtles at that hour of the night when no one is watching. Hope you all are doing well..... thanks for the input. Now we can break out a cozy pillow, pop in that movie & eat some Blue Bell, we are all allowed a quart because there are no fat or calories. Free intake!!! :)

Oh Kttn so many virus going amuck. I am in on Blue Bell, Rocky Road, yum. Have you tried the Cherry Amaretta one. Its going to be my next buy.

I can't believe you both are talking about ice cream!! It was -6 degree overnight here! Without the windchil! Personally, I'll take the turtles, but kttn, I hope you get whatever makes you feel better!

Well I am not sure what all is in the ice cream. I bought a yogurt very similsr to this at Braums last year that was awesome-but Blue Bell is the very best over the icecream kingdom,lol. I am thinking probably, some pecans, cherries & of course the amaretta Going to buy it tomorrow if its not sold out at the store-have it on special $3.99 1/2 gallon, very good price. In the summer I like the banana split, just like eating one, Mooliniun (?) crunch very good, has chocolate in it too. I am very partial to the chocolates. Yummy!!! Wish I had some now, darn it. lol.
