Define the difference between Oxycodone and Percocet Please

Ok I guess I was told that I was incorrect in my post that I said that Oxycodone is the generic form for Percocet. So with all of this talk of shortage on hand and the confusion now growing in my mind since my script bottle says that I am taking Oxycodone. Would someone please explain to me what the difference is between Oxycodone that is on the shortage list and Percocet that I take? Is there a difference between the two? Am I wrong? When I get my scripts for my percocet it says Percocet on the script. But doc has signed the spot allowing for the generic equivalence. So when I get the bottle it says on it Oxycodone. Tell me what I am receiving from there?

Sorry if I am sounding stupid at this point but I just don't understand.

Oxycodone is the generic for percocet..at least that is what it says on Drugs.com and on my RX bottle. Maybe we are both missing something?

There are two differences between oxycodone and Percocet.

  • Percocet contains oxycodone and acetamenophen. Oxy has no acetamenophen
  • Oxycodone is time-release so you take fewer pills and less often than with percocet

The same dosage of either drug should give you the same relief.

Lets see here....

Percocet is the name of a drug owned by Endo Pharmaceuticals it's a combo of Oxycodone and acetaminophen. So technically Percocet is a brand name of the Oxycodone/acetaminophen combo. Oxycodone is just that, Oxycodone... It's an opioid semi-synthetic pain killer derived from codeine I think.

Also recently released is Combunox which is ibuprofen and Oxycodone...

Then there is Oxycontin or in generic form it's Oxycodone ER/CR

-Percocet
-Endocet
Both Oxycodone IR (instant release)

-Oxycontin
Oxycodone ER/CR (extended release, controlled release)

Generic:
Oxycodone IR
Oxycodone ER/CR

The generic ones are made by a few different companies.. Watson, Teva, Mallinckrodt, IVAX, Endo (makes both name brand and generics, pretty funny imo).

I was taking Roxicodone 15 mg. until my last visit...then he put me on Percocet 10 mg. I really don't like the Percocet, they give me a lot of stomach trouble. I had never taken oxycodone before 2 months ago, I had always taken Hydrocodone...Lortab 10's.

Then 2 months ago I told my new Pain Dr. that the Lortab had started waning in it's ability to take care of the BT pain. So he put me on the Oxycodone...It seemed to work very well at first, then it stopped nworking as well. But when I went back to the Dr. they told me about that stupid recall...He claims that it should be worked out by next month, but I am starting to wonder about that...I wonder what he could change me to that would work better?

Still confused. Is it the Oxycodone that is in the Percocet form that is on the shortage list or is it the other Oxycodone that is on the shortage list. I don't wanna get anxious about this recall for nothing if my percocets are going to be fine and I will be able to fill them with no problems if it is the other Oxy that is on the shortage list. I called my pharmacy this morning and they are still waiting for their stock to come in so hopefully it will come in and I will be fine if not then I don't know what I am going to do. I guess call my doctor and see what they say.

Mach......can we say confusion in triplet hahahahahahaha.

I would say to you relax for now. I just got my percocet refilled yessterday, no problems. And YES my "percocet" is the generic (non-brand name) form so on the bottle it says Oxycodone/APAP. The APAP I believe refers to the tylenol, which is what makes percocet different from plain oxycodone. 03Mach pretty much has it right, but I know that's confusing to you! The "plain" oxycodone (without tylenol) is I believe what's having supply problems. You should be fine, but if you're having any concerns best thing is to call your own pharmacy now and ask.

Often my pharmacy will tell me if they're having supply problems, if they have a lot of stock on their shelves, etc. So rather than agonize pick up the phone and call the pharmacy you use. If they anticipate supply problems ask them what your options are. But again, I just had my generic percocets (Oxycodone/APAP) refilled yesterday with no problems!

BTW I think one poster mentioned oxycodone was the time-released version; oxycontin is the time released version of oxycodone, without tylenol. And I believe the manufacture of generic Oxycontin (Oxycodone ER) has been stopped for patent reasons. That has nothing to do with percocet, Scarred!

My pharmacy confused me yesterday when they told me that they didn't know whether or not they would even get any in or not, so I thought that the percocet was on the shortage list. She indicated that she thought it was and I totally panicked and also she said that they only had 20 in stock and that they did not know if they even get any in today. Anyway...long story short I got my Oxy's today and everything is alright with those. But another problem has struck! On Friday I called in my refill for my Kadian. On Wednesday I did not get my refill....today still not here. I have called my doctor to let them know that I do not have but two days of pills left if I stretch them and cut back. Unfortunately I do not have a choice here and I am a little miffed over the whole thing. My doctor's office has been so good about getting my meds to me within three days after I have called them in but this has caused quite the problem and I'm in a bit of a pickle now.

Anyway I hope they will be here tomorrow. I called and left a message with them and hope to hear from them today.

Do you have a choice of pharmacies? I don't know if there's only one. In my small town there's a CVS & a Rite Aid. When CVS has been out, they'll call across the street to the Rite Aid and I've been able to go there.

Course this was all before I was forced into using the hospital pharmacy, 45minutes away, for all my scripts due to the hospital's insurance plan.

I'm glad at least you got your percocet generics. I hope the kadian comes in.

Don't have my choice of pharmacies as in my contract it states that I am to use one pharmacy only. No switching. But I just heard from my doctor and they mailed the script yesterday so it should be here tomorrow. Going to call the pharmacy to make sure they have enough Kadian to fill the script that way I am covered on that end and everything will be fine. Went digging in the safe and found enough Kadian to cover me through the night and tomorrow morning. There was about four extras that I had put in a bottle in the back of the safe that I had forgot about so I will be ok for the night and tomorrow morning.

Whew talk about dodging a bullet there huh?

P.S. Nurse said that it might be a good idea to call in script 6 days in advance instead of 3-4 as I have been doing that way I don't run short again. I think that is a great idea.

Oh wow! Talk about a weird way to do a script. Ok I will get my script tomorrow....take it to Wal-mart....they will fill it with 78 capsules and send a fax to my doctor saying that they only filled a partial fill and how much they gave me. Then my doctor's office will send me another script to fill the remainder of the Kadian that I need to make it through the rest of the month. Isn't that strange? LOL

Unfortunately, pharmacies can't partially fill a script for these controlled substances. So the pharmacy needs a new script to fill the remiander.

I'm not real sure if anybody knows whats up with the shortage... I've heard DEA issues, production issues, ect... From what everyone is saying it's only the straight oxycodone that is an issue. So in theory you should be ok with the Percocet or generic oxycodone with apap. Now that being said, many people who can't get the *oxycodone only* script filled are being rx'd Percocet. So if the pharmaceutical companies didn't anticipate this boom in Percocet scripts, we will soon see a shortage in Percocet (aka oxycodone with apap).

From what people are saying it's the oxycodone pill with no apap thats feeling this shortage. But I would bet the Percocet (AKA oxycodone with apap) will start having issues soon....

I also have a hard time understanding how there isn't a shortage in both meds... I mean if the "raw material" which is oxycodone is where the problem is, how can we have the end product (that being the raw material which is oxycodone + apap)??? Sorry for my rambling... Just got out of a marketing class and we are talking about this type of thing, so I guess I'm over analyzing it!

I think that Mallinckrodt is making generic Oxycontin again. Purdue is allowing them to make small quantities of them a bit off topic, but info is always good right?

I wouldn't bank on this just working itself out by next script time. I mean don't go pounding down the docs door demanding something else. But I would talk to a pharmacist or 2 and see if they can recommend what might be an alternative for you. Your sig says you only take the lyrica as needed? How does that work out for you?

I was thinking the same thing about the "trickle down" effects to percocet. And since you're dealing with the marketing end you could probably figure that if the generic oxy/apap gets hit hard, then docs will try to move to the percocet, but insurances won't pay for that and on and on and on and on.... just like the lyrics from Journey's song.

I did wonder why that one manufacturer was being allowed to make some. The God Purdue annointed them? Sorry for the sarcasm, but the pharmaceuticals and insurance companies always come out on top of all of this, don't they? I'd better not go off on a rant... mad

Mach; I wouldn't be a bit surprised to see that you are probably right. It's sad really that this is all going on and I gotta wonder if its not suspicious at least to me anyway. Between the price of drugs and the DEA I think the hoops are getting bigger....thicker...and harder to climb...jump and crawl through. Now who's rambling? Don't mind me...I'm hungry and in need of Pizza to stay my hungry belly (Pizza Hut is delivering soon :-) ).

PA; Of the topic.....I bought some English Lavender oil to add to my bath this evening in hopes that it would relax me enough to where I can sleep in peace tonight. I'll let you know how it goes.
