oxycontin vs Morphine

John, I have NO idea... but I take oxy 80, holly smokes you are on some high dosage of oxy. I prefer it over morphine, just different with us all.... maybe ask a pharmacist? Good luck & welcome!! :)

I will tell you from my own experiences with pain meds that Morphine has never helped me with my pain..I don't know why, but Oxycodone does seem to help to a degree.

 

We are all different with what works and what doesn't.. It has been a very long time since I took Morphine, so I don't know that much about it.  But I do take methadone for my main pain issues, and that helps a little...I also take Roxicodone 15 mg. 4x daily for my BT pain..Well, I did take it until the recall. And I hope to be back on it soon.  Right now I take Percocet 10mg. 4x daily, and it doesn't seem to help as well.

the first morphine tablet i had was avenza, you are correct..... that tells you exactly how i feel about it vs. oxycontin.... and the 80mg oxy works a lot better. next visit i am asking for 100, at least until i can finally get my pump.

crohns, i am no dr, but just in my experience i had no luck with avenza. now i am on 80mg oxy ER, what you take is wicked strong, you know that. the choice is your to try- but in my case i'd stick with the oxycontin. but we are all different.... the choice is yours. if you don't have enough pain management talk to your dr. now your IR oxy can go up to 30mg- you still have room to play around there. maybe consider that? i take 5 a day. only the dr will know your type and where to go if you are not getting enough relief from your meds. i have had everything from morphine, to patches, dilaudid. no luck. hope it helps some, maybe someone else will come around with more info. my best advice is to talk to your PM dr.

Thanks for the replys everyone. My doc appt is next wed. I will let you all know how that went. Also I am so glad I have a small country pharmist he orders evertything he knows I am taking and I never have to worry about going to big chain stores to fill them. Can you beleive I had a script for 90 40mg oxycontin and I stopped by a Giant food store and the pharmist said I can fill half of the prescription but then the rest of the script would be dead. I cant believe they can even do that. Alot of the bigger chains I hear hate to fill pain meds. I am so glad I have found a small community pharmist and keep good contacts with him and my doc. The other people look at some of us as addicts. I always say I would rather have 10 years of good life for the rest of my life instead of 20 years of life with agony and pain. I have one question have any of you ever ran out your oxycontin script say a few days early and conserved your ir oxycodone until your next one can be filled, I have been thru withdraws before and never want that feeling again. I thought I could control my pain by just praying on it and exercisiing and everything else but notjing works. Hope to hear back from my friends here. Take care and have a good day John

I havn't been on for about a week. I had a severe Crohn's flair and was hospitilized they got me back in control and am feeling better now. I spoke with my doctor today and we both agreed that to keep taking the 3 40mg of oxycontin daily and up tp if needed 6 to 8 capsules of 5 mg  oxycodone for breakthrough pain. I have a question that is really making me like no one cares. I have worked at my same company for 18 years and have not been able to work due to my illness has basicly put me out of commission. I have entitlement to 2 years short term disability so that my long term insurance will have a chance to kick in so there would be no overlapping of my income. I keep being told by the insurance company they need my doctors to give them more records I have gave them staacks and stacks and they are still telling me I am normal. I have had several feet of my small intestines removed, and now massive scar tissue has fomed, I suffer from diarriah 6 to 7 times daily have R. arthritis set in and takes me about 45 mins in the morning to basicaly put my pants and shirt on and make it down my stairs. I could go on and on but its frustrating to even type this because it makes me feel that they could give no care in the world for what I go through daily. I am on the verge of losing everything I have due to this. All I hope for in life is to be able to take care of my teenage son and do things with him on my good days. Most of the time I walked hunched over and limp due to my pain. If I didnt have my meds I dont know what I would do. I thank god every day when I wake up and hope it will be a better day. Has anyone one been through this with their work and insurance making it diffuclt just to get 65% of you pay for a short time? I only have 10 years until I can retire but the crohns has taken such a toll on my body I feel sometimes I cant make it anymore. If I could work I would rather work my last 10 years than to give all those years up. Im scared but just take it day by day.

John, PA lady is absolutely right about the short term disability people. What they are doing to you is the standard way they treat everyone who files for it. They are not singling you out at all this is one of their stall tactics. Its nothing but a nightmare. Do you have a book you can read up on about this disability. They usually have good ifo in them. What about someone at your HR dept at your job, sometimes enlisting their help can go a long ways. You might also consider asking the adjuster handling your claim to be more specific about what they need from your dr.

Thanks Pa lady and straydog. I called Cigna myself and after a very frustrating phone call they finally told me what they want as if all my medical records from the last 18 years isn't enough. I took the advice and I asked my doctor what can I do. He advised the system makes it very hard and their hopes are that I give up and make it go away. My doc advised me he knows what they want in their terms and is putting a letter together to send them a response related to my medical records. The insurance company is asking how many times do I go to the bathroom, how many times have I vomited in the past months and on and on. I am very sick and I thought once my doctor sent in all my records everything will be ok man was I wrong. He said not to worry he sees it everyday. It is hard laying at home most of the time and feel good if I make it from the bed to the couch. I wish they could see what I go through everyday of my life. Im can't afford to lose my health insurance. I am in the Johns Hopkins hospital in Baltimore Mdl alot sometimes as long as a month when my crohns is really active and also I wouldnt be able to afford my meds. John are you sure your short term disability is for two years? Be sure you verify that so that you don't miss out on filing for the long disability. You know they have clauses that say you must file within certain time limits so double check this. Just thinking, Susie

I have crohns and I know what a struggle I have and the cost of medicine is out of sight out of mind.

After my appt with my doctor last week he wrote in again to my insurance company to back up my records for the past 18 years even though the insurance company only wants records from the time i went out of work until current date. It is really a big game. I checked and my job does give me a option of 2 year short term disability but the catch is I didnt realize the insurance company who would be paying me my 60% of my salary would make it so diffcult. To put things in a nutshell my doctor advised me he knows what they are looking for and instead of just concentrating on my crohns disease he made it a clear statement to them. He siad I am on heavy dosages of narcotics for pain management and suffers from severe depression and is following up with a psychiatrist for depression and the last statemnt to them was I am not able to perform any work of any kind. I am wiating to hear back from my work to see what is happening and whether I am approved or not. I have filed for social security disability 5 months ago but we all know how long that can take If all works out if I am deemed disabled I will have my 2 years short term and hopefully have my social security overlap this. If all works out I can retire from my job disabled abd pay the retire ree rate for my health insurance. I feel the system wants us pain patients and other patients with disabilities to give up and just be quiet. My health insurance means more to me than my salary I was making. I can not afford my meds without insurance. I do have a lawyer for my social security and i speak with them weekly. My social security lawyer says I will more than likely get turned down the first time then after that is when she goes to work and appeals the case and go from there. I have learned that most people about 70% get turned down the first time they apply for ssc benefits. I hope the last thing my doctor sent them gets me my 2 years then I will feel I can breathe a little. Hope everyone here is doing ok and feeling good today.

Thanks for the reply whitebeard. Yes I have been on a long and never ending road. My work has done nothing to help me even though I signed massive amounts of paperwork for them to talk to my doctors and get my medical records. I live in Maryland and have gont to every hospital over the years but have spent alot of time at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore. I had to have a tpn line inserted in my chest for 4 months to give my bowels a break. My work didnt care I had to drive or ask someone to take me all the way to Baltimore to obtain my records. The point Im trying to make is it is like no one is on my side if you dont fight for yourself then no one else will. It was interesting today as I was on my way to my psychiatrist appt and the insurance company called and said they still need more records then it looks as though I may be approved. They dont care what anyone has been through with their illness. If just for one day the person on the other end of the phone could live my life I think they could appreciate my disease and be happy they dont have it. Talking to them is like talkin to a wall. But anyway Im keeping my fingers crossed and i should hear Monday if everthing gets approved. I wanted to put this question out there if someone may have the answer. My physicitrist prescribed me 300mg extended release seroquel and was wondering if anyone else here is on this medication. I have not taken it yet but tonight will be the first night and wanted to know will this help me sleep and not be so stressed and high anxiety. Hopefully someone will respond before tonight so I can maybe know what to expect.
