Morphine Sulfate ER (Kadian) vs Oxycontin

IM just curious what the dosaging difference is between Kadian (Morphine Sulfate ER) and Oxycontin.  At one point i was taking oxy 20mg...3xs a day.  And it seemed to be a comfortable schedule. I was able to keep a clear mind and was pretty much pain free.  But I need a generic so I am thinking the Morphine Sulfate ER.  Anyone with info between the 2?      Thank you!

Everybody is different. I was on Kadian. As the dose was increased, I experienced weird sweating even when I wasn't hot. It worked well enough for pain, but the sweating was hard to tolerate. I was switched to Oxycontin and that side effect decreased dramatically.

We all are wired a bit different when it comes to our responses to medications, it seems.

sounds like the two are similar, maybe ask a pharmacist or ask your PM dr. kadian is a lower pain med than oxy- just wondering why you are going backwards- are you trying to quit oxy? kadian was one of the first meds i was prescribed, i had a good run with it for about 6 months (thats a long time for me) and we tried the patch next- hated it- then to methadone and then oxy, 10, 20, 40, 60, now 80. its at a good level for me now. i tried morphine ir, i had no idea it had sulfa in it (i'm allergic) and had a rough time for about a week and then read that sulfa was in it and had to take my script back- dispose and back to oxycodone (i'm subbing dilaudid until oxycodone returns). i have been all over the map with meds. while i was in the hospital (that was the whole pain patch and they didn't carry them so my PCP had me on the morphine sulfate er) which worked great but again while i was (luckily) already in the hospital had allergic reaction to it. so i really didn't have much chance to evaluate the morphine sulfates you are asking about. i can recommend oxycontin for me it works well.
btw, i saw you are looking for a PM dr, i don't know if you are willing to drive to tampa, thats where i live, but my drs are fantastic. its a large practice with several drs and 2 locations here. they have everything on site, mri, pharmacy, pt, wellness center even. they are great. i have been with them for four years and nothing but kind and understanding with me. same for my husband. they have an outpatient surgery center a block away from one of the locations. they do all kinds of nerve blocks, nerve & pain pumps, etc. if you read my other post you can see i am about to get on the pain pump. let me know if you want their info.... i know its a long drive. good luck otherwise in your search i know its hard.

kttn251977:    The reason i was going to Kadian is because it has a generic.  It would cost me $5 with insurance.  Oxy had the generics pulled from the shelf, so I would have to pay %100 of the cost, which could be easy $500+  a month. 

Also your the 4th person I have come across that has no had problem in Tampa. I have 3 people that i have met that travel to Tampa because they each said they had an excellent PM there. Wonder if its the same PM center??  And if you would i would greatly appreciate the info!

I am curious on your condition?   I am currently taking  Wellbutrin 100 mg 3x's a day(depression); Paxil 20mgs daily(depression,anxiety); Zanaflex 8mgs at night; Valium 5mg 4x's daily; and Hydrocodone 10/325 4x's daily (Fibro, chronic pain),  Lyrica 100mgs 3x's a day(pain and fibro). My doctor that had me on oxy retired and my new neurologist thought it was too strong for my condition........ (That d***$ )

I have been diagnosed with fibromyalgia, but currently in the process of trying to find the reason for the chronic pain of the lower lumbar, saccrum, hip, knees, and feet.  I have had a bone scan that revieled arthritis at the tibiotalar joints (where the leg meet the feet) and at the proximal side of the ankles.

They know there is something else more there.  My feet and legs will go numb sometimes at random times. Sometimes making it unable for me to walk. I thought it was herniated disk but bone scan did not reviel anything there.   I am soon going to get a 2nd MRI of brain and spine, to check the discs and also to start ruling out MS. My 1st MRI was 5 years ago. Symptoms have become much worse since the 1st MRI. X-rays have been negative too. Except some scoliosis.         Hope to find relief soon,              Thank you, hope to hear from you.

hi jer, look up tampa pain relief center ( .com i think they have a website). my PM is DR Guirguis, who is fantastic but i would also recommend DR Oterro (i think i may have misspelled their names) i have been with Dr G for about 4 years. Dr O is fairly new, but he also has a psychology degree- so he is a triple "threat" :).

they will take an MRI and i can't remember the term for it, but they have a specialist who will come in and strap you to this machine with wires and it checks electric pulses almost. it doesn't hurt. but it will find the nerves that are bothering you. i have the same problem with the almost burning fire like feeling in your veins, legs to feet- shoulder to arms. i have had a few nerve blocks to almost deaden the nerves and it took a few surgeries (outpatient, very minor) to get relief. i take lyrica to help with that and also fibromyalgia. they also can inject medication into the bothering vertebrae (like herniated discs) to help ease up the pain.

they also have on site, mri and pt center. so you don't have to drive all over tampa to find everything.

my PM also thinks i might have MS i am just being lazy by not seeing a rheumy. i want to get my pain pump in first.

and i have met several people from orlando in the Drs office saying there was not a decent PM Dr in their area so thats why they come to tampa. that is why i chimed in about mine, i know, from them, that area is in need of good drs. they will do anything you need if you are up front and don't hide from them- say for example you had to go to the er and was given a pain killer med- let them know because it covers your contract. but they take time to talk to you about your diagnosis and what plan of action to take. Dr G is overweight and around my age 30's, though i think he may be a little in the older 30's, but he understands because he has back pain. anyhow, let me know what you decide to do!! good luck!
