Hi all -
I was wondering if anyone has had an epidural to help with nerve pain. I have been dealing with this for about
16 months since my lung surgery and the cortisone shots aren't helping anymore. I just had a set yesterday and he used twice as much cortisone this time, but said if this doesn't help he wants to send me to get and epidural. He also thinks I should get this anyway to help manage this pain when I have surgery on my stomach in two weeks. He thinks it will help not having two different areas to deal with. So I guess what I am asking is had anyone tried this for neuropathy?
Thanks,
Bill

Hi Bill,
I suffer from severe back pain from failed back surgeries. The pain is complex and is a combination of nerve pain, muscle pain and bone and joint pain.
I have tried the epidural and found it to have no lasting benefit. Now that's just my experience with it. I know others have had better success. It just goes to show you that everyone's system reacts differently to medications and procedures. Discuss it with your doctor. The risks are low so you might just give it a try.
Good luck to you in whatever you decide to do.

I used to be treated w/ nerve blocks that worked well for a while. I have severe nerve damage in my foot. After the blocks started to fail, we tried radiofrequency, which has worked very well, and i have not needed a proceedure for 7mo now!
What type of stomach surgery will u be having? I also had a hysterectomy (which is assme u r NOT having :) but ended up with a entrapped nerve in my inscision. I have had 4 blocks for them in the groin area, and nothing has worked, so im headed back to surgery by the end of this month. I guess sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn't....good luck, i hope u have luck with them.

I have had several surgery's on my low back and I also have had so many epidurals that I have lost count, in my case yes they have helped ease my pain and on a few occasions they have taken the pain completely away, but on the flip side they have done nothing or have increased my pain, to answer your question YES I would have it preformed, the chances that it will help you are better than it will not. Good luck and let us know how it go's

Thanks for the replies everyone. I was really hoping the latest nerve block would have worked, but it is already wearing off. I am going to wait a few more days and see what happens.
Shannon, I am having a probable redo of my reflux surgery. I've had swallowing issues for the last year and a half. They finally decided it was time to go in and see what happened.
Take care,
Bill

There have been lots of back post on epi's and nerve blocks, if you have the time to
go back through and read them, just a suggestion! most of us here have had them done
without much success, I would say try it and if it helps, might be worth it..
So, I'll wish you good luck in hopes that these help you...
lots of soft hugz.........

Hi everyone,
Well the last nerve block on 5/1/09 didn't work. Hit me full bore Monday at work. Tuffed it out until the ride to a from Chicago. Called the surgeon who wrote orders for the epidural. Now I am just waiting for procedure scheduling to call. Seems the person was out of the office on Thursday and didn't bother to call today. Guess there is always Monday. Thank God my surgeon asked how I was sleeping, I'm not by the way. So he prescibed Ambien. I finally slept almost 7 straight hours last night. I haven't done that in months. Wow, I didn't wake up every half hour to readjust and get something to drink. Or keep checking the clock for when it was time for more pain meds. Slept right thru the next dose and actually felt a little better this morning. By afternoon it hit me full bore again though. Sure was nice to sleep straight thru the night.
take care,
Bill

I'm a bit confused. I always thought that injections were supposed to be short term relief for just when the pain spiked to unbearable levels. That's what my PM tells me anyways. He says the facet injections should last for 1-3 days, the epidurals for 5-10 days. I'd say he just made that up, except it seems like just about
everybody I know, with a few exceptions here or there, doesn't get months worth of relief out of injections.
For me, they're very helpful. I'm not usually at an "8.5+" for more than a few days, so the injections help bring down the pain a couple levels so I can use heat & PT & such to continue functioning during that time & prevent deconditioning & then the pain will return to my normal level (7-8). On occasion, I need to repeat the injections a time or two & on other occasions I have lucked out & had the shots last longer than typical, but I always thought that they are just supposed to be a short term fix for acute flare-ups.
I think plenty of past posts probably address that, so Char's suggestion is a good one about
checking back through old posts. :)

Hi Opnwh14,
I had an nerve ablation that completely stopped my horrid headaches for 11 months. He had to do another one because the pain is debilitating but it hasn't worked as well. The nerves regenerate ane you have to find them and have another ablation. I've also had cervical and thorastic epidurals which helped alot. I'm going to have the to have another ablation to try to find where the new nerves regenerated. Good luck with your surgery. I'll say a prayer for you.

Hi all -
I had the epidural today. My back is quite nub, but the rib pain is slowly creeping back. It's been about
8 hours since it was done. He wasn't sure if it would help much if any at all. At least he was upfront and truthful. He told me to get a hold of the anesthesiologist at the hospital where I am having surgery and ask them to do one there with the catheter left in place for a continuous control after the surgery. We'll see how that plays out.
Take care,
Bill

Today was my last Nerve Block in a series of three, two weeks apart. The first one I didnt feel any relief and the second one I felt about
a 10% relief. Im hoping in the next day or two I will feel more of a relief. For me its enough of a relief that I will start in two weeks another series for the right side. With having Urological RSD (nerve damage) they can only do one side at a time.
This is what my PM says. Nerve Blocks can help but not with all patients. They are a short term for of relief. Anywhere from a week upto if you are lucky 1 year. He says 4 - 6 months is the norm if it works.
It takes the edge off the pain. I'm still in pain and taking my pain meds at the same dose. It has saved me from taking breakthrough meds.
My views are if there is a chance of any relief I jump on it. They can poke and prode me all they want. I'm not looking for pain free just some relief...
I hope this helps somewhat...

Wow...I am having surgery on the 18th also. Not for the nerve, but my stomach. Now that the numbness is gone I feel like a mule kicked me in the back. Good luck to also Shannon!

I've been having issues with the reflux surgery I had 3 years ago. They are going to go look at what is wrong and possibly redo the whole thing. The thoracic surgeon I see for my ribs thinks it is partly aggravated by the stomach issue. He thinks it may be pushing on my diaphragm. Hopefully this one surgery will fix both issues.

Hi, Bill,
I don't think I've said hello to you yet, so I apologize for my lateness. There's not much I can add. I've had tons of various injections, but the only one that helped was the one to my SI joint. Still, it's always possible the people who get longer term relief from epidurals and other injections aren't posting here!
Anyway, I wanted to wish you luck with your surgery. I'm beginning to think we should have a calendar page so we could list when everyone is having surgeries, procedures, tests, etc.

Hi Bill,
Best of luck with your surgery. I hope that block kicks in for you soon! I've also had many blocks done (although not an epidural), but none of them ever helped me.

PaLady -
The calender page is a good idea. Would make it easier to remember who was having what and when for sure.
Skeye -
The blocks used to work for a month or so until about
5 months ago. Then they only lasted a couple days or a week at the most. My spine is still sore today, but my ribs are a little better. The pain isn't as intense now, so I say it was worth it.

PALady, the calender page is a good idea. It is hard to keep up with who is having what. My memory is not the greatet right now, anyway.
Bill, I will be keeping you in my thoughts for your surgery. I do hope all goes well and that you get some relief.Good luck to you. And keep us posted as to how it turns out.
I didn't get alot of relief from the epi's and nerve root blocks. The first one I had didn't work at all. The second lasted almost 5 weeks. That was a nice break. I honestly hurt only very little during that time. And my third one, lasted for 11 days... But at times it gets to where some relief is better than none. It is just aggravating that the results aren't better than wwhat they are. And the procedure itself hurts!!! The second one I remember crying during it and I said I would never do another one!!! On the third one I did the moderate sedation and that did help. It wasn't bad at all.
I am rambling, I'll stop.
