Well, I've been on a whirlwind tour of pain, medications, surgery, and finding a whole new family.

And most of that since just the beginning of the year.

This morning I add on Social Security Disability on the First Try!

I guess they believed that I am as messed up as I am messed up.

One thing I would suggest that others have said no. GET AN ATTORNEY IMMEDIATELY. I did virtually NO work, and I never mind someone earning an honest dollar.


EDIT: I inidicated SSI-D originally which isn't actually the same as what I got. I got Social Security Disability.

What a great thing to read ...Tony, you give me hope. I guess I'll try the Lawyer route and maybe I'll get mine as well.

ME: I started my application without an attorney. Then changed my mind and found one of the 'we do social security only' lawyers and made an appointment.

Dropped some stuff off at the attorney's twice and did no other work. Very satisfied with the process and simplicity. (Course, I got mine so my attitude is a bit different I suppose.)

Congratulations, Tony!

Most of the attorneys around my area won't take the case until you've been denied the first time. I think (just MHO) that they want the beginning work done, and to know there will be at least several months of back benefits awarded so they can get more $$. So I think it's great you found an attorney who would take it right out of the gate - and that you were successful!

I did read on the SSD site that they have recently updated their quick response features. One is called QDD (I think for Quick Disability Determination) and the other is a Compassionate Determination and there is a specific list of conditions (a lot of them cancer, but ALS was recently added) which will automatically get people approved. Sometimes within 10 days! The diagnosis itself does it. But that doesn't do anything about the waiting period (5 months) to receive benefits or the waiting period for Medicare.

Sorry to have gone on here! I'm doing a lot of reading and learning as i deal with this!

Congratulations!! Welcome to the First Try Club! I didn't use an attorney because I thought (was told) I would be rejected at least once. Got mine the first time also. You are correct that even with an attorney helping you, getting approved on the first try is an indication that yours in not a trivial or questionable case. But we knew that already. Good work.

The party is tomorrow night. Casuals and pajamas only. If you can't grab a plate and drink virtually you'll have to bring your own though.

VeryVery good news, but I'd still trade it all and throw in some more for a 10% reduction in whatever this is, pain and SA and drugs and you-name-it, I've picked up over the past year.

And I'm still waiting to hear back on my FOURTH sleep study, as well as for the SCS test (the SCS test I myself have put on hold to see what the sleep apnea does).

To all, celebrants and well-wishers alike, I thank you. The satisfaction of running their maze in one try is very nice indeedy; and yes, I was much in needy (sic). (not Spelled-In-Correct but rather a pretty sick attempt at poetic rhyming)

A friend convinced me to try shortly after he applied. So I've been hearing his mumbling on top of my own. Recently he was turned down for the second time and I hadn't been turned down yet but was right at the point he received his first rejection. I know how sick he is (long term) and so I figured I would be waiting through the third attempt just as he did. No one was more surprised than I about this morning's news, nor greater surprised to find that they had already electronically transferred funds.

So now, I go back to waiting on the doctor to contact me on the sleep studies and what comes of those. And my pain doctor to see if things get adjusted from the sleep study stuff, and whether he'll adjust my dosage for breakthrough. I'm am, believe it or not, in considerable more pain at this point. My hands HURT. My feet HURT. But it is bugaboo pain and getting past the breakthrough medicine (Morphine). I may have to convince my wife to go forward now, rather than wait on the results of what sleep apnea does.

Anyone applying for SSD, I wish you well and quick analyzing so at least you know the answer!

I just wanted to add my congratulations.  I, too, credit having an attorney as part of the reason I was approved on the first try (that and the 23 back surgeries, the device pumping dilauid into my spine 24 hours a day, and the numerous pain pills I have to pop into my mouth every day). smhair  

Anyway, as a doctor SS made me see said: "It's good to see someone who deserves these benefits actually getting them."  Hopefully PaLady, Uniquelyme, and any others from this forum that are also so deserving will join us in receiving these much needed and deserved "benefits" real soon!!!

Don't get me wrong, Lorie. I believe those who I know of on here who are applying deserve the benefits. I believe[d] that I deserve them.

However, the friend who convinced me to apply has been denied twice now. And I was spending days with him when we worked together. I saw and heard his despair and it definitely rubbed off. And this was right up until 8:03am this morning when my attorney woke me up and shared the good news.

I've been somewhat depressed, as I think we all get from time to time, and in a fairly deep funk over recent events.

So this pick-me-up was quite a decent psychological pick me up, which I DO deserve but was looking like another that wasn't coming thru.

So, thank you for pointing out the reality of it, Lorie, that is all too often overlooked. If we allowed the world to see how we actually feel to the degree most of the rest do, they'd double or triple our benefits if we promised not to appear in public again.

I am trying to find information right now. a family member has spinal stenosis and can barely get up an go anymore. They are deeply in dispair and not sure what to do...Anyway, not my point. lol

I think the main government website is www.ssa.gov/disability/ to find out basic information. There is a section that gives conditions for adults, both physical and mental.

Also, do a search for Fast Track and you'll find the info. for what they call QDD and also Compassionate Disability. You can see if your friend has one of the diagnoses listed for a compassionate determination, which supposedly is automatically fast tracked.

Congrats tony and I too welcome you to the First Time Club. My benefits were awarded on the first application too. I did not have an atty either. I have handled alot of SSD claims so I was very familiar with the process. My disability resulted from crohns disease at the time.

Congratulations!  I was also approved 1st try!   I was very relieved not only for the income but because I had been turned down for Health Insurance, well actually, I could get Insurance but with a disclaimer on my neck and a $1500 premium (that was 5 yrs. ago I shudder to think what the premium would be now).  I was so thankful when Medicare kicked in!

Its a double edged sword, happy you were approved but then reality that you are really Disabled!

Tony, I am happy for you especially for getting it on the first try! That is great and you deserve it. I am keeping it in the back of my mind for myself, if I do not get back to work. That is just one of my thoughts.

I hope you get the anwers from your sleep study soon. You will soon have everything taken care of. Best wishes to you. And I wish you a low pain day.

JUST got off the phone from getting those results.

Nasty stuff, but I get my machine (not even sure what type or anything yet) in the next day or so. They've been rushing things (although it sure doesn't feel like it from where I sit) so I have hopes of getting the new machine prior to the weekend.


Once again, I thank each who has checked in. And to all those who attended the party, let it be known that only about half of the horse ovaries were virtually contaminated. Word is, drink lots of fluids and stay near the throne for a few days and you should be virtually OK.

I'm so sorry if you were offended in any way by what I said or if I put a damper on your joy & relief over getting approved for SSD, that was not at all my intention, and if I did, again I sincerely apologize.

I wholeheartedly believe that you and the others from this forum that are trying to navigate the process of getting these benefits deserve them.  I was referring to the many people in this world that "work the system" to get these benefits when they don't deserve them, as I feel that they are the reason that so many get turned down as your friend has experienced.

This is a subject that I feel strongly about as I have a twin sister who along with her husband have made their living from frivilous law suits, false workman's comp. cases which somehow gave way to them receiving SSD as well, and since kids learn from what they see, my 22 year old niece is falling right in their footsteps and it makes me so incredibly angry. 

I have learned my lesson, next time I will stop at Congratulations!!

Nor, I hope, any offense taken from your direction. I really don't think either intended to convey anything that would give offense. At most, maybe some kind of misunderstanding...???

Ah, your story about your sister explains a lot. I've watched as several I have know over the years have done the same; it has made me quite sensitive and angry at the whole structure as well.

No second generationals that I know of but who really knows.

I hope not with me. As we have both said, we should be able to speak plainly and sincerely in here, and work out any differences if there appear to be any. Let's keep an 'open system' family going here. Trust is important.
