I am a wife, mother and grandmother to 4.  I also own three black Scottish Terriers.  I am bi-polar, having to quit my job a year ago.  Still having problems, but more stable.

I have come to the pain site to see if anyone suffers from weather related pain prior to the storms arrival.  Before we even see the clouds the humidity starts to set in (winter and summer) I start feeling like every joint in my body is screaming stiff and swelling, sometimes knifelike pain, and as soon as it all passes, I feel like a new person.  I have seen websites where this is refuted as old wives tale, but I know different.  Just checking to see if anyone else experiences this nuisance.

Hi Linda and welcome to Healing Well. Yes, many of us on here know about the pain you describe. In fact, its generally arthritis related for some of us. Keep in mind I am not a doctor nor anyone else on this forum. No, it is not an old wives tale not by any stretch of the imagination lol. Its real and it does happen. I have had migraine headaches for years and when the barometer starts going haywire it triggers a migraine.

Have you seen your dr about this problem? If not, I would suggest that you do and see what he/she can offer you in way of relief.  Lets face it, pain is not fun and it can interfere with your every day activities.

I am sure some of the others will pop in and give their 2 cents worth, we are real good about that,lol. Hope you can get some help and will hang out with us. We are probably the most supportive group of people you will ever run across. We have a great time here and the more the merrier. Many can offer tidbits on what helps them when they are in trouble, just lots of info to be exchanged.

But seriously, from what you have described I would at least see my PCP. If you get no where in that, ask to be referred to a rheumatologist, they are very knowledgable in different kinds of arthritis.

Your pain is very real and those of us who also suffer from it know it to be true. Years ago when there wasn't medical and scientific research to understand these pain problems, which seem to mostly affect women, we were told things like your 'Old Wives Tale' thing...like, It's all in your head; It's just growing pains; You just complain too much; You are crazy...and the list goes on and on.

I agree with Susie that it's often somewhere in the area where a rheumatologist can help. They deal with arthritis AND other pain issues. I have similar types of pain and it's what is called Fibromyalgia. I don't know if this is what you have but it could be. It's not life threatening but it sure is miserable to live with. Basically it's all over muscle/joint pain and many people have increased pain with weather/barometric changes especially when cold is involved. I would suggest you visit our Fibromyalgia forum and do some reading and asking questions over there. You might gain some insight as to whether or not this might be what you have.

But for sure do get to a rheumatologist and have them check over your symptoms. One good idea is to keep a pain journal so you can take it with you to doctor appointments. Below is a link to a free journal page you can download and print. By filling this in daily and asking each doctor to read it they will not only take you seriously about your pain but will see on an hourly basis what your pain is like and what may be influencing it. Hope this helps and keep us posted ....

      Good Afternoon. My name is Dani, and it is very nice to meet you. It sounds like you ve got a busy house hold to care for!  :-) I am just starting my family and I love it. Probably be the most challenging job/s of my life. :-)

 

       I too feel weather changes. It seems to be only sever storms. about 4hrs or so before a storm arrives. All I feel is a moderate "pushing outward" sensation at various points through out my body. No big deal, just take off my rings. I've gottten quite used to it. Doesnt hurt anymore when it happens. Just a minor annoyance now and again. In fact I had always wondered if it were an old wives tale and am suprised to know others have it aswell. very odd indeed. Another moment for the "Kinda errrie" book. shakehead

I just wanted to add my welcome to the forum. You've already been given a lot of great advice. I will just add that I never noticed the increased pain with the weather until after I had my double lumbar fusion surgery. It's been since then that I can't help but notice how much more I hurt everywhere with just a change in the day's weather. And while my pain doesn't go away on good weather days, it's sure a lot easier to manage.

It was funny how it happened a couple of times before I made the connection. It isn't bad enough, or last long enough to see a doc. Just annoying for about a day. Sometimes I sit in my jacuzzi, and lay in bed or my recliner. Sometimes my feet and ankles hands and wrists are the worst. They are used the most and I can barely stand and prepare a meal (I had to have my husband squeeze the mustard on my hotdog the other day when a storm was coming in)LOL, but as soon as that storm passes, the pain magically disappears. I used to have a lot of migraines that I thought were weather related. But since I have been on bipolar meds I have not had migraines. I guess that is a benefit of being bipolar if you can think that way. I have read that the water barometers are more accurate than the clock type and you can really make the connection with one of the glass and water. I think I will try to find one on the net. I love this site. I can find so much info here. The best site I've found. I only have pain in one or two joints on good weather days.

I can predict weather better than any meteorologist! I can tell you what kind (rain, snow, sleet, etc.), and how bad of a storm we are going to get. If the storm is going to be bad, I will feel it up to 2 days before. If it's just going to be passing showers, I will feel it a couple of hours before.

I can't tell you how many times I have told my family it was going to be bad weather and they will tell me that there is none in the forecast, but every single time, I have been right.

For me, I feel a lot of pressure in addition to the pain. After I had my fusion w/rods, screws, & cages, I told my doctor that when it was cold, I felt cold from the inside out, and he responded that I was - the metal conducts the cold, so it made perfect sense that I felt that way.

So, it is definitely NOT an old wives tale, and you are definitely not alone.

Welcome to our group, I'm sorry that you are in pain, but this is definitely the best place to come to for support!

Wow - you may have just given me a clue as to why I've had problems related to weather changes since my fusion. Because it's exactly how you descriibe - cold from the inside out. And the other day it was actually warm out but I think a front was coming in and I sat in the living room chilled and thought I must be going crazy! I kept wanted to describe it as feeling like dry ice, if that makes any sense. But you're exactly right, it's on the inside!

Loris & PAlady, I just thought of a new product. I know from living in the cold regions of our country that they make heat tape that is made to put on water pipes and such to keep the from freezing. I know you are starting to get this vision now. We approach the FDA with a heat tape to be placed on the rods, plates and cages after a fusion. When the weather changesm just simply plug yourself in and beat the chills. Now remember this is my idea so if it makes it big all the proceeds will go to all us CPers having yearly get togethers.

Welcome to our Family!!  I have to agree, I too can predict a storm days before it occurs.  I live in Phoenix and right now it is Monsoon season, the problem we have is we get the humidity, dark skies, winds BUT no rain.  Unfortunately my body holds onto the pre storm pain until the rains finally appear!  Here in AZ we all love the rain because its an infrequent occurance BUT I have to say I love and hate this season!

FJ I like your heat tape idea...again the Phoenix SUN has the heat tape ability with the sticky residue lol.

By all our posts here we can see that pain before the storm is NOT an old wives tale!

Welcome to the board, 3blackdogs.  I love your name  by the way.  This is a great place.  I don't post often but I read a lot.  Everyone is very nice and supportive here.  I hope you feel right at home!  I have heard of this so often.....the pain before a weather change.  I work with someone who has chronic migraines.  She is like a barometer!  As soon as that pressure changes, she is in such pain!!!  you are not alone with this.

I too want to welcome you to HW, it is a wonderful place! I agree with everyone else that feeling increased pain with weather disturbances is NOT an old wives tale. I'm pretty sure that it has to do with the barometric pressure. I'm affected by the weather to some degree, although probably not as much as others here.

I do hope that you stick around with us! You are guaranteed to learn a lot, as well as receive a lot of support!

Hi all:

Fatherjohn: I love the idea of the internal heat tapes! Just wrap those babies around the rods! I live in a mobile home in Upstate NY, so heat tapes are a must if you want running water in the cold weather!

On a serious note, I wish there was something that could be done for this issue, as I have rods, screws, cages, SCS w/leads, intrathecal pain pump, as well as a gastric pacemaker (it's the same exact device as the SCS, but it is implanted in my stomach), so in the cold weather, there is just no warming me up!

Let me tell you that you are not alone. I feel when There is a change in the weather. I have pain all the time but it gets alot worse when a storm approches. I have a long history of back pain. I am on alot of pain medicine but still have pain but alot better than when I am not on pain medicine.

Hello! I am new here. I have pain now waiting for a storm front to get here. I am wondering.....Are there any REMEDIES for muscle/joint pain that corresponds to the barometric pressure?
Also, would a loooong bath help? Could the water be a shield from the barometric pressure? Or would it be worse when I got out......
