I am suppose to be seeing the NP on Monday for a follow up on my over all condition. I am hoping she will be able to pull some strings and get me into the MD before mid October or at least talk to one of the MD's about prescribing something to hopefully take the edge off for the next 2 months.

I am not as bad as I was 2 weeks ago when I almost took a fall while shopping, but I would say I have only stabilized down 1 pain point since then. Currently running at daily 7-7.5 levels on the good days and still spiking into the 8-9 range once in a while.

about the only thing I have found to help is moderate alcohol consumption. Please no lectures about that. I am not overly thrilled with it myself but I have currently exhausted every other legal resource currently available to me including a trip to the ER only to be given some muscle relaxers and told to take 800 mg Ibuprofen for swelling and pain every 6 hours. Like taking 800/6hrs instead of 1000-1200 every 4 hours is going to help more and from practical experience the last thing I need is for the muscles in my back to really relax and cause more pressure on those discs.

And yes, I have made several (+40) calls to other MD's in the area (as in 65 mile radius) and since my condition is not considered urgent I am getting appointment options, at best, 3-4 days before the one I have in October. Also none of the pain clinics will take a patient without a referral, and then it will be late, late, September before I could get in for an consult and then 2-4 weeks after that before I could be treated.

Jim, I do hope your appt. goes well on Monday. It is almost here, not much longer to wait. I do hope you are able to get some meds that will help reduce your pain level. And I won't lecture about the alcohol consumption. You said you know. But, please do not drink if you are started on pain meds. It could be very dangerous for you. And I know you know that too. Maybe she can get you into pain management with the referral you need sooner than October. It sure won't hurt to try. Please keep us posted as to how this turns out. I do wish you the best.

Wow, I cannot imagine being at a 7 to 7.5 day in, day out for that much longer. I firmly believe that the Lyrica has stabilized me to a "normal" level of 4 to 5, with some days that are worse thrown in just to make me thankful. If you have not tried Lyrica I would suggest bringing it up with your dr's. My back is screwed up, too. I have been seeing a chiropractor that has taught me more about what I have going on in my spine than any of the other, numerous "specialists" I have seen combined. I am not suggesting going the chiro route for you, but hoping you can find someone that will provide some relief.

Don't know where in this great land you are, but if you ever want to knock a few back in the hopes of getting some relief, I'll keep you company :)

Actually Jim a chiropractor may help you.  I used to see one on a as needed basis before my back got to the point where I needed surgery.  One thing I found out was that with the bad disc that one leg was longer than the other.  They were even when I was lying down but different length when standing.  I started wearing an insert in my shoe to correct this and it did help alot with the lower back and hip pain.  Maybe it is worth a try for you.  Also, after my fusion surgery I still had the insert in my shoe and it dawned on me that possibly the surgery had corrected the problem so I went back just to have myself measured and sure enough I didn't require the insert anymore.  Hope this helps!!

Once again I have to say that I am very lucky to have found such a great PM.  If I had to " idea   look for one I'd be in trouble.  I know so many people that are in such bad pain and they have no Dr. to get help from.. or they have to wait months to get in.  I think I should have went to Medical School..in the Islands maybe?  then I would help us all, and without any kind of hassle...

If only I had thought about this sooner...

Well for starters it is still going to be October before I can get in to see an MD. All she did was prescribe me a medication called NABUMETONE. It is an anti-inflamatory. The verdict is still out if it is going to help. I am suppose to take 2 per day of these 750 mg pills and I haven't had the script long enough to get two in yet. Just took my first one this morning.

So far all this drug is doing is making me sleepy. I have a 10 day trial supply of it and am going to give it a fair shake as I know it can take a while for anti inflamatory meds to start working.

     I have been taking nabumetone 1,500 , like you, for over a year. I do not know of any "sleepy" side effects.

Nabumetone is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug[1] (NSAID) of the arylalkanoic acid family (which includes diclofenac). Nabumetone has been developed by Beecham. It is available under numerous brand names, such as Relafen, Relifex and Gambaran.

It is used to treat pain or inflammation caused by arthritis. Nabumetone works by reducing the effects of hormones that cause pain and inflammation.

It has been shown to have a slightly lower risk of gastrointestinal side effects than most other non-selective NSAIDs.

Oh gee. I really hope this morning was due to something I ate not agreeing with me and not the new drug. I woke up sick as the proverbial dog today. Barely made it to the bathroom and was sick every way you can think of. I didn't take any more of the drug today and feel a bit better so I am going to try again tomorrow. Yesterday was the first day I took 2 of those 750 mg horse pills. The day before I only had one and think maybe 2 is too many, at least right now.

I hope I can build a tolerance for this drug because it did seem to take the edge off a bit and I actually had 5 1/2 hours of decent sleep. Compared to the 2-3 hrs of fitful "rest" I have been getting it was a blessing.
