......about an extended release opioid (Oxycontin and MS Contin were mentioned).
As we had to have a telephone consultation due to my joyous swine flu (hereinafter referred to as 'bacon'), the conversation was kept rather short, and he wanted to discuss it properly at my next consultation, but he certainly wasn't unwilling - and would continue with PRN pain meds as well if we decided to go down this route.
Anyone's experience's with these drugs and/or other extended release preperations would be most helpful.

P.S - the bacon is a little better, still got a bit of a chest infection though. It doesn't seem to want to go away.

Chris, I've got the bacon, too. I felt it coming on Friday and went to the doctor yesterday. He started me on Tamiflu and I'm feeling somewhat better already. He said we caught it early enough for it to get it cured faster.

These are the best two meds ever but good luck getting. Drs are reluctant to give because of widespread abuse. At least in my experience. Because they are concentarated, time release you only have to take 1 every 12 hrs and for me they didnt goof me up, only took the pain away. Still after my back surgery they would give me no more for the chronic pain. You might get lucky, it is the one I would prefer but they wont give.

I don't take any of the ER pain meds, so can't offer experience there but others can. Responses to medications are so individual, though, that I think the only way to know would be to try them if you think they're needed. In other words, if the short acting ones aren't doing the job, and your functioning is still way too limited by pain, it could be worth a try, especially if you could manage on a lower dose. Since you're still young (well, compared to me LOL) a lot of doctors may be reluctant to prescribe it, but since you have a doctor that is it sure is worth a discussion after you're finished with your "bacon".

Joy - sorry to hear you have "bacon", too! This flu stuff is scaring me a bit. Really makes me want to isolate but can't see how I can isolate any more than I already do!

The dreaded swine flu was huge here (being Australia) but it seemed to mainly be a real threat to pregnant women. Most kids had a fairly mild dose, only a handful nationally needed hospitalisation. It was more of a scare hearing about it than the reality. I thought by now they would have a vacine? I have really low immunity and teaching I thought for sure I'd be exposed but I only caught one flu and it wasn't the bacon variety. We're into spring now so hopefully no more danger. I wish you both well.
I have been on the slow release oxycontin only short term about a week and have found it brilliant but as I suffer from RA I am not allowed to stay on it, just to help me move freely after surgery.

I've been using Avinza (ER morphine) for about 3 months.  You take it once daily.  It does help but I am going to speak with my PM on my next visit cause I think that there are days when I could get by without the meds but am scared of withdrawl symptoms if I don't take it.  I also have oxycodone for breakthrough but don't need unless I overdo it or a weather front comes through that always makes me very sore.  The constipation was bad at first with this med but got better after a few weeks and I was back to normal.  I used Miralax until my body adjusted.

Chris, I think you know this already, the bottom line is how the meds are going to work for you.

Some people can take two "baby aspirin" and they better not operate heavy machinery while others can take 50 mg of morphine and won't feel a thing.

My point, which I am sure you get already, is to take other people's experiences with a grain of salt and to use it mainly as a conversation starter with your doctor and not to be afraid to try a certain med because it didn't work for someone else or someone told you it was "weaker" than one you may be on now or tried in the past, etc.

Ditto to what Jim posted. We just metabolize drugs so differently. Some will get 12 hours of relief and some may only get 8 hours. There is truly no set pattern, its an individual thing for sure.

I hope the two of you bacon peeps are feeling better.
