Oxycotin vs Percocete?

I don't know if it's a BIG step up, that would depend on the dose but the main difference is that Oxycontin is time released, like those time released cold capsules. And the one problem with that is if you were to bit into one or crush and take it you would get an 8 hour dose all at once. Hence the controversy. The "druggies' want it just for that reason and add to that the media and we have a perfectly good medication that has been trashed to the point that we can barely fill a prescription if we get one.

The Percocet is oxycodone mixed with acetaminophen. They last about 3-4 hours and come in many dosages and mixtures but don't have the same problems as Oxy.

I would make one serious suggestion. When you see your doc it's not a good idea to ask for a specific medication....specifically Oxycontin! That's one clue they watch for in drug seekers. Now you and I could be perfectly honest and have done our research before we ask and be perfectly innocent, but doctors have to be so careful because of the goofballs who abuse them and the prescriptions that they pretty much have no choice.

So, when you go just talk to him/her about your pain control, or lack of. Ask about possibly trying something that last longer than the Percocet and let the doc take it from there.

Another wonderful idea that many folks have used very successfully is to keep a pain journal. I'll leave a link below. Copy as many pages as you need, one for each day. Fill them out daily and whenever you go to any doctor ask them to look at it and review your pain management. This way they know you are serious plus they get a great picture of the pain you live with and how the medications you currently take are working. Also, you will be able to see how and when your pain increases or decreases.

Relax, be very straight forward with the doc and you'll in turn be treated with respect. Good luck and keep in touch...

Oxycontin isn't just generic oxycodone. While both drugs have the same narcotic base of oxycodone, one is immediate release and one is extended release.

When you take Percocet, it releases the whole dose of oxycodone immediately and then it's done, which is why it only lasts 3-6 hours. Oxycontin releases a small immediate dose of oxycodone, then continues to release a controlled dose for the next ~12 hours, so it's in your system and active much longer than Percocet.

Extended release medications are always considered a step up from immediate release medications because of the move from intermittent to constant dosing.

I have never taken Oxycontin...so I know nothing about it..but I do take Oxycodone 30 mg. Many people get the 2 confused, maybe because of the name? I do have one question...what is the difference between MS Contin and Morphine?

MS Contin is continuous release morphine sulfate manufactured by Purdue Pharma, which also makes the brand name Oxycontin.

I've never looked it up, but I've always assumed Purdue uses "contin" in both of those names as an abbreviation in reference to the continuous release dosing of the respective narcotic. In the case of MS Contin, it's Morphine Sulfate continuous release; for Oxycontin, it's Oxycodone continuous release.

But like I said.. I've never researched that..

well.....the reason I ask is that I think the PM is going to send me a script for the oxycotin. That has me a little worried as the Percocet is not working anymore or at least not as well as it used to. You are right, It wears off in about 3 to 4hrs at best. So Im a thinking that the oxycontin will be basically the same drug, only that it last longer. Also I would never try to obtain any drug from a sorce other than my PCD or PM.....sorry to see someone offer a source other than that.
