Whats everyone doing for Thanksgiving??

We will be having Thanksgiving at my son's this year. I quit putting on the spread several years go. I had both holidays at my home for many years and to be honest I just got tired of doing it all. So, I told my children since they are grown and have families it was time for them to start their holiday traditions and we would be the guests. The kids love taking turns at their homes each year and it has worked out great. My brother and his wife usually join us.

This year probably going to my goddaughter's. She's having her father's side of the family for the first time this year, and even though I'm on her mother's side, she made sure to tell me there was a place for me. She is such a sweetie.

Karen - so glad to see you post! I have to say my appetite changed after my lumbar fusion surgery and hasn't returned since. Oh, don't get me wrong - I still eat, but don't have a taste for much. The things I used to really love I shrug my shoulders at. So you're not alone.

PALady and I just talked about this on another post, but I want to state it again for all the people in the same situation. Nothing, I'm doing nothing for Thanksgiving. Well, to be honest, I'll walk the dogs, read, putz around the house. This time of year is challenging for people with no/little family; I'm not depressed about it, it is what it is and I've learned to accept it. I think what's a little bothersome is the assumption most people have is that everyone participates in the holidays, or has family to go to, TV commercials are the worse; Oh, and the feeling I get sometimes that people think I'm a sad person b/c I don't participate in the holidays. One of my friends told me a story once that sums it all up for me: It's Christmas season, my friend works for a small non-profit, employees have cubicles. The director, who's big on xmas announces at a staff meeting early part of December that she's having a xmas decoration contest and whomever shows the biggest/brightess spirit decorating their cubicle will win a prize. The festivities commence, but my friend does not decorate her cubicle. A week later the director asks my friend into her office and confronts her about her lack of holiday participation. My friend explains that she is Jewish and does not participate in Christmas. Director says she doesn't understand why she cannot just get into the "spirit" of the season and that her behavior shows lack of team spirit and group cohesiveness. My friend explains that to her, Christmas is a Christian holiday and being Jewish it would go against her religon. Director, not getting it at all and frankly doesn't really care, says can't you just get into the "spirit" of the season, friend says, "That spirit you're talking about is Jesus, not decorations, parties or presents."

I have to agree with PA and Big Lucy. Since my folks died I typically don't do anything for either one of the two holidays. The BF and I will exchange gifts on Christmas but we never did anything special. In fact we refer to our Christmas ritual as having a Jewish holiday since we would usually go out for Chinese food.

The only reason that I'm cooking this year is that I'm the stranger in a strange land and I'm not all that excited about going to a holiday dinner at people's houses who I met only a month ago and have only seen twice in that time. So, instead I'm cooking here at the house for just me, the BF, and his father. We're not doing a big spread, it's just gonna be turkey and the 3 dishes that they requested. Other than that, we're gonna sit, be comfy, and do as little as possible.
