Rx was over $200 today.
Anyone know of a less expensive alternative to Oxycontin? The Lortab is affordable, but desparately need both. Thanks.

I don't have any insurance and had to switch off of Oxycontin...since even with a discount, it was way over anything I could afford...So I now take MSContin which is very cheap...with OxyIR for breakthrough..both are generics and work very well together for me...

There is also Methadone which is very inexpensive as well...Until they put out a generic again for the Oxycontin, it's going to stay on the high price:(

Chartreux has a really good suggestion that may work best for you. I think the Dr's are starting to understand that patients can't afford the meds. They have been more willing to give something else if you ask...partly because they need you as a patient too.

I have found the Dr's to be most receptive when I took in a copy of my insurance co-pay book for the pharmacy or a list of meds suggested by the pharmacist that were close to what was given and much less expensive. It didn't give the appearance of drug seeking, but of being an advocate for less expensive meds that have the same or similar functions. Be prepared, however, to give them a copy of what you bring in because they often take my note for the file.

Welcome to the chronic pain forum of Healing Well. I don't have any Rx insurance and have had to use a lot of the resources listed in the CP101 topic thread at the top of the page (there's a lot of other good info there, too). There are discount cards you can use even with insurance in some cases, and if your income is low enough, you may be eligible for one of the pharmaceutical company's programs. I get many of my meds from the pharmaceutical companies at no cost right now because my income it in the pits, but I'm not yet eligible for Medicaid. But for generics I have to private pay and like Snowbunny mentioned it is worth it to call around and check out prices.

There is a tool at the www.yourrxcard.com site that lets you put in your zip code and the medication and tells you what all the pharmacies in your area charge. Plus there's a free, easy discount card you can print out. And that's only one of several sites. They're worth a try, but it's true depending on your circumstances and insurance you may have to work with your doctor for a less expensive medication.
