I'm dreading monday!

 I'm not sure i'm ready for this.My ortho dr. has me starting pt for my back, and from past experinces with pt for back pain all it did was make the pain worse. So i'm dreading tomorrow because my pain level already stays around a 6 or more. Wonder if i should go ahead and take something for pain before i go. Another thing is he wants me to go 3x a week for two weeks. I just hope i can handel it and not get into so much pain that i can't deal with.The last time i tried pt on my back my back was in better shape when i started than it is now and my pain levels went off the chart!!! I guess i just needed to rant for a min. I hope you all are having lpd and are doing well ((((((hugs))))) and tc.

I guess Pt is different for different things, when your recovering from surgery
PT is supposed to be rough so they can get you back to performaces (shape)
but my PT for my pain is different in that I do very light not pushy exercises
and my pt does not push me, my low impact stuff is meant to help my balance
and to keep from being a couch potato, but on bad days he takes it slowly with
me and then afterwards uses the ultra sound and tens with either ice or heat..
and I use a recumbent bicycle at home, every other day, some days I can
only do 1/2 a minute and then today I did almost 5 minutes, just be up front and say
being pushy will not help...and you'll leave if they use the no pain no gain tactics...

Being this is your first appointment I would advise taking any pain medicine prior your appointment but have them with you so you can take one immediately afterwards.

This first appointment should be mostly an evaluation to see what you can do, can't do, what causes pain to increase, decrease etc, and if your pain is masked by pain meds you and the PT is not going to have an accurate base line.

After the first appointment I would suggest taking your pain meds a few minutes before the start of your session. That way they will be kicking in by the time you are done for the day but still will be able to more accurately judge your bodies pain response.


That's my opinion anyway.

I just wanted to let you all know that the pt is going well. The therapist is going slow and not pushing me to do anything that causes pain. She said if it hurts to back off she just wants me to strech things out for now. The massage she does before any exercises feels wonderful. Thanks for all the advise everyone here had to offer it really means alot to me.

Yeahhhh! I'm glad things went better for a change. You certainly deserve a break and a little compassion.

I've been having hydrotherapy or aquatherapy and I'm really beginning to feel stronger, it seems to have taken longer than the last time I had it, I was getting a little despondent but I'm noticing the improvement now.
So slowly but surely Kay you will get there I'm sure. I also noticed some days I just can't do anything and other days I'm good. So don't be hard on yourself if you have a plateau period or feel you're not improving all the time.

  Good luck Michael , you can do this bro . Don't do anything your not comfortable with , you don't have to engage in every excercise . Best of luck and keep the faith ! Mikel
