Who's tried Opana???

My pm doc just switched me to percocets (10 mg/5 day) from roxicodone (15mg. 5/day) due to the recent crackdown on pain clinics...

He offered me other options such as Opana, which I've never tried. I cannot tolerate morphene (nor can I spell it!).

If anyone is taking, or has taken Opana, I'd so appreciate your experience with it.

Now I'm wondering if PM doc would consider oxycontin, and use the percocets for breakthrough...thoughts on this anyone?

I should have been thinking faster on my feet...I had no idea this would happen as this is a reputable pm office, and I've been the model patient...

Thanks in advance...please, any insight/advice would be greatly appreciated

Hi. Yeah, he dropped your dose 25 mg per day, which is 33%. Hmmm. Do you feel comfortable asking him to prescribe Oxycontin? That seems like the logical step to me. On the other hand, I know that some doctors do not like to prescribe it. Maybe that's why he didn't suggest it. I've never tried Opana, but from what I read it seems like people either love it or hate it.

I thought they were having problems with getting Oxycotin too. I don't think I would ask for that one. Yankee Girl if you ask for Oxycotin you know the look you said the staff gives well, you run the risk of getting the same look from the dr by asking for Oxycotin. I know we have had someone on here that is either on Opana or tried it, but its a weekend and they tend to be slow on here. Susie

Only thing I can tell you is that they recommend not taking Opana if you have had an allergic reaction to morphine.

Opana is a hydromorphone. I tried it for about two months and I couldn't take it because morphine makes me sick to my stomach and the opana did the same. It is supposed to be a good pain reliever, works pretty well for most that I know that have tried it but the nausea was too much for me and having to take another med to counteract the side effects of the nausea wasn't something that I wanted to do.

Hi Yankee Girl,

I am on Opana... started at 20 mg.... for a month and then bumped up to 30 mg.... I take them twice a day with Oxycodone as my BT med...

I haven't had any problems or side effects....

In the past I tried Avinza and hated the side effects... It made me boiling hot, therefore I was always sweating... it also gave me night terrors and that is what made me stop...
it also caused me to be afraid of everything... I found myself putting on the alarm in the middle of the day because I was so frightened.

What does frighten me about Opana is the cost.... almost $500 for a one month supply.... I could really take it 3 times a day but am not willing to fork out almost $800... for 90 pills

The Opana is said to last 7-8 hours although I find it to only last 5-6

Opana is the first med to control my pain... the past three months of taking Opana, I have experienced what it is like to have low/little pain... what an amazing relief!!!!!

p.s. I read your other post about Fentanyl patch.... be careful.... I never tried this patch due to the fact that I live in south FL.... the heat + the patch is a bad mix!

OMG, is that the cost with a script card Draka? Does the mfg not offer any assistance for this medication? That is just nuts people having to fork out that kind of money.

The script card is for $30 a month.... and no, I don't qualify for any assistance because I do have health insurance.... I had to go back to work in order to pay for my health insurance and meds.... can you imagine how this affects my neck pain, standing all day... :(

Have you tried printing out and using the card at www.yourrxcard.com? You don't have to give your name on the site or anything; it's a free card and it can be used even with some insurances. It's worth a try. I can't tell you how much money this has saved me, but then I don't have any prescription coverage. I get most of my meds through the pharmaceutical programs because my income is so low, but I have to buy the generics and the card from this site is the best one I've found.

Draka I really feel for you. I have a script card too, but some of my meds are covered under their programs to help with high copays. You may want to check into this.I only pay $10 for three months of Humira pens and my Lialda is $10 for 30 days. Susie

My husband looked into all those RX med saver cards...

Basically they only work if the patient has no health insurance at all....

The drug company that makes Opana... Endo Pharmaceuticals... does have a patient assistance program... but we make to much $$ to qualify for it... according to ENDO you had to make less than $24,000 to qualify... the system as a whole is just concerned about profit.... not the patient.

Morphine made me dizzy and sick to my stomach--couldn't function well at all, so if Opana is morphine based, forget it...thanks Sandi and Jim for your input.

Draka, I'm so happy that you get such relief from Opana, but the cost!!!!! OMG, that's just awful!!! My pm doc said it was expensive, I assumed (which I know I should never do) that it would be one of those $60.00 drugs on my insurance for name brand...it's a moot point, I don't think I want to try it due to the morphine issue.

I'm in central FL, outside a lot so the Fentanyl patch would be a poor choice.

Susie, I agree that asking the doc for oxycontin may be risky. My percocets are 10/325...so maybe he'd agree to adding 2 additional percs..like I said in my other post, that would put me at just 5 mg below my roxy script.

I'm just so tired, I hurt and am nervous about having to go back to see him..he knew darn well what he was doing and how much he'd be shorting me...Sorry for my rant, and sounding so whiny..so many others are so much worse off than I...

Hi,

I tried Opana....it's oxymorphone. Dilaudid is hydromorphone. They DO NOT work the same way for me at all. I can't take the Opana.

Ooops, Retiredmom is right, I confused the two , dilaudid and opana. I do okay on dilaudid and not good on the Opana. Sorry about that everyone.
I've been having my own pain issues to contend with lately and being tired from not sleeping well is catching up with me.

i was on opana for awhile. The only side effect I had was extrememe constipation. Went to 20mgs 2x's day but really didn't have great relief. Now I am on embeda which seems to help a bit.Its supposedly newer. I don't have any side effects but it doesn't last for 12 hours nor have I had any morphine based med that worked for the 12 hours. With all I still need to use norco for BT. Only problem, with insurance it still costs me $320 a month. It came with one of those cards for the first 6 months bringing the cost down but because I am on one of the medicare prescription plans its still VERY expensive( of course it doesn't top the actiq which was costing $2700 a month!).good luck and i hope it works for you

I just went from methadone and oxycodone to opana ir and opana er.dont know why they refuse oxycodone but want us to take the opana,it is better in some ways but has more of chance for people to abuse.if opana hits the streets like the oxycodone did than people that abuse it are going to realy ruin their life.I think dialaudid would have been the better choice.the only thing stronger than opana is diamorphiene (heroin)pharmacy style.I am afraid it will blow up on them,people who abuse opana are having to turn to heroin to bridge the gap of time till they see their doc.(not good)what do you think.

Just FYI but this particular thread is from two years ago in 2010...

I know that you have your other thread started last week if you wanted to add to that...

But if you are just responding to other threads on the boards...it's helpful to look at the date stamp on the top of the last post...

Also...just be aware that discussing illegal drug use is not permitted on the boards...(I don't think you are saying you do this...but just being careful to not bring into the discussion about others who do)

Unfortunately there are addicts who abuse medication and are not taking them for actual pain...

This site is not for this as we are all pain patients who follow the law as well as take our medicine as prescribed...
