Severe Chronic Head Pain

For the last 2years after a car crash, i started getting a severe pressure like pain on the top right side of my head almost everyday. The pain begins at the top right and moves to the bottom right. I also get very dizzy and been taking different pain medications to help the pain but nothing works. I cannot fall asleep at night because of the pressure and feels like my scalp is glued to my bone. I've already done 3 procedures to help with the pain but it has not helped at all. Also, both of my ears feel like they are clogged. Somebody please help with any answers or something to atleast help me understand this problem. Thank you

Hello RosyC and welcome to the forum here at HealingWell!

One place you might take a look at is the Headache forum. There are several members there dealing with this type of pain.
I had the pleasure of meeting one of the Moderators there, (Annuk) and I believe she can possibly guide you in a better direction.
She lives in the UK, so bare in mind the time difference of about 6hrs. Give her time, and she will respond, as well as the other members that frequent that forum.

Of course we want you to stay here with us :) but I'm a thinking that it might do you well to check the other forum as well.

Hi Rosy,
Have you seen either a headache specialist or a pain management specialist? There are all sorts of different treatments ranging from topical gels (yes, it's a bit gross in your hair but I know I was just grateful to have some options) to shots to Radio Frequency nerve ablation to surgical implants. They also often use certain meds off-label -- amitriptylene & nortriptylene (sp?) were originally designed as anti-depressants but it turns out they are actually WAY better at treating certain nerve pain conditions. Sometimes anti-convulsants and muscle relaxants can also help.

I'm not sure which one(s) will work for you, but I would suggest finding someone with a ton of experience dealing with all different sorts of head pain & explain things to them.

     Good evening. Welcome to the Healing Well Community. My name is Dani. *hugg* It is very nice to meet you. This is a wonderful community for knowladge and support. I am sure you will agree we have alot of loving, caring, compassionate members here.

     I am sorry you suffer from such debilitating headaches. I can well imagine you are fed up with all the pain. I hate knowing you are unable to even sleep. Your days must be very hard. We have many members here on the chronic pain forum who suffer from headaches as well. I am sure they will pop in soon. Also, like Michael suggested, we have a Chronic Headache forum aswell. Don't worry, we are one big family here. So, many of us post in multiple forums  :-)  

     Though we all suffer from chronic pain in different places in our bodies... we all come together with a common enemy and that is pain. Yes, it is good to have doctors, loved ones and family support... It is just as important, I think, to have a support group of people who know what the daily struggle of chronic pain is. Simply because noone, no matter how much they love you, will ever be able to "understand" better than someone who is in the same "boat" that you are.

    I am so sorry for the headaches and neck pain that brought you here.... But, I am very glad to meet you. I look forward to knowng you better as time goes by. Stay strong!

Hi Rosy,

Sorry to hear you are suffering with these headaches. Am I correct in saying you have not head anything like this before the car crash? Frances is right, you need to see a Neurologist who is a Headache Specialist.

Migraine and many other conditions can start as a result of head injury, shock etc. a Headache Specialist is the only person who can differentiate properly what is going on with you!

Do you mind me asking what procedures you have had done? Hang in there!

I have not seen a headache specialist but i have seen a neurologist. The neurologist sent me to get a CT Scan and MRI and it came out that i had arthritis in my neck but my neck isnt what is hurting me. I also saw a chiropractor and he sent me to go get a three point trigger shot (which i had a bad reaction to and ended in the hospital) but i felt a little better. Then i fell and bang my head again which cause more pain then before! I got a Block Facet shot two times which didnt work at all and then a radio frequency procedure which also did not work. Before the car accident i never had so much pain; i had simple normal headache once in a while but not like this. Anyones advice is greatly appreciated (:

Welcome to our wonderful friendly forum. Unfortunately we all suffer from chronic pain, but everyone here is so supportive. I have made some very special friends here.

I can honestly say that I can feel your pain. I have been suffering with headaches for more than ten years with the last three years being constant pain 24/7 and level 10. My headaches are bilateral and temporal and a pressure sensation. For myself, nothing has worked. I have seen all kinds of doctors, done every kind of treatment, tried all the meds possible and nothing has worked. All my tests are negative. Tomorrow I see a third neurologist. I have tried botox, trigger point injections, nerve blocks and have gone out of town for help. Ice on my head is my only salvation and right now most of my forehead is burned from the ice.

Keep searching Rosey, is all I can say. Something might work for you that did not work for me. i pray you can find answers and soon.

Oh Rosy, is your pain going into your jaw at all? You mentioned a problem with your ears. I have also had all the work done for a tmj disorder and that has been corrected but unfortunately i still have terrible headaches. Just another thought for you.

@Suzane Ice packs are my only salvation as well! nothing for me has worked but im still searching. And my jaw does not hurt at all.
I hope that something finally works for you too!

Yeah for ice packs eh Rosy!! Sometimes I even put ice in a baggey and use that sometimes.
Are you able to work Rosy? do you mind me asking your age? where you live? I am in ottawa, Ontario. I am a registered nurse in a paediatric hospital although I am now on disability and not sure if I will be able to return to work. I sure miss my work!! I am 52.

Keep posting Rosy and we will all try to help each other.

Im still working but i dont think i will be able to work for much longer since the pain continues to affect my everyday activities. Im a teacher and live in Florida and im 55

Hi Rosy,

I can only stress that you should see a Neurologist who is a Headache Specialist as they are the only ones to find the right medication or treatment for you as an individual. It is good to educate yourself as much as possible where treatments are concerned but the ultimate skill with headache comes from the 'Headache Specialist' combining treatments or searching for off label treatments that are going to meet your individual need!!!

Sadly I have seen so many headache sufferers ask their Docs for what they think is going to work best and suffered so much as a consequence long term!! Sadly too there are not enough 'Headache Specialists' to go round everyone.

Part of finding what works for you means following their advice and trying various treatments that may not work, but ultimately they will come up with what will work best!!

I fought the Docs for years and years for them to believe me about what I was going through!!! Finally when I produced a Headache Diary I was believed enough to see a Neuro but still had to push hard for a few more years before I finally saw a Headache Specialist! He then diagnosed what I had been suffering with for 18 years at the time - that was in 2007!!!

I have had chronic headache for more than 30 years developing a further chronic headache type after my son was born - he is now 21 years old!!!

Where are you in Florida Rosy? I know a couple of our CP friends here that are in Florida, Pete and Lindaloo. I think Linda is in Ocala and I know Pete is about one hour from her.

What kind of doctors have you seen so far Rosy? I can appreciate what you are saying Annuk. I did go to the best headache specialist here in my city and she offered me botox for my type of headaches which I had already tried x2 and that did not work. Tomorrow I will see a third neurologist. My type of headache does not seem to fit in any category. I just don't know anymore. All I want is a little relief.
