Jim, I'm glad to hear that you have found a solution so quickly. This must be a huge load off of you're mind!

Jim,   I just read your story, and was feeling so bad for you. I could tell you were in such a state of terrible turmoil.  

Then your story had this beautiful ending. I am sooo glad for you and your wife, it brought tears to my eyes when I read about this doctor who obviously cares.

 I believe someone else was showing He cares too.

May I ask which country you live in?

Hi Krw 135, I live in Australia. Your Medicaid would then be the same as our Medicare I guess, but we have private Medicare too.

If for some reason you or anyone else finds yourself in that position and doesn't have the benefit of such a stroke of luck, here is my advice:

Find a doctor that may be willing to prescribe Suboxone (preferably Subutex which doesn't complicate matters with Naloxone which people absorb sublingually in wildly different amounts potentially causing side effects, but either way it's better than nothing). It would be better to find one that isn't officially doing it for addiction treatment since that's not what you're looking for....you'd be looking for prevention of sudden withdrawals and maintenance of your opiate agonist tolerance, maybe tapering down so that you eventually don't need the suboxone.

Obviously, it's better to do what you do did, for the time being.....continue the pain meds that work.

But unfortunately, in the long run, I've found that even if you don't have trouble with docs directly, opiate tolerance will continue to go up indefinitely. If your pain continues or worsens, eventually you'll have to find a way of working with that reality.

There are many options -- for one thing, you may want to look into Low Dose Naltrexone (LDN), as a replacement for opiates long-term, or possibly *Ultra* Low Dose Naltrexone (ULDN), which can prevent increases in tolerance alongside your agonist pain meds (oxycodone etc). Possibly even reversing your tolerance somewhat, if you find the right dose (10-100 micrograms per day, sometimes 200-300 for those on higher doses like yours, spread out in several doses throughout the day every 4 hours or so).

Both have potential for making pain treatment a more sustainable situation. LDN alone may not work as well as opiates do when you're getting the right doses for your tolerance.....but it's sustainable whereas agonists alone are often not.

Anyhow, I'm glad this worked out for you, and if you ever need advice on dealing with doctors or in making the most of the tools available to you in the war against pain....I'm happy to help any way I can.

         If I was in your situation what I would do is of course call the drs but not give to much of your medical history on the phone..Especially if your on a lot of  narcotic pain meds. Let me give you a little over view of my situation. I have been diagnosed with Ms and have been on pain meds for a few years and I went to go see a pain doc he wouldnt treat me because of my narcotic pill usage and amounts. And my pcm has to treat me which he is very limited on his amount that he can give me. So what I have leared with finding new docs is give enough information and let them know your medical history but never tell them everything over the phone. Then they will look at you as being a "seeker" doctor shopping even with all the medical history. And with the law cracking down on narcotic pain pills thats probably why your doctor dropped you as a patient. I do have a question though?? Was he giving your wife pain pills? If so that could be the reason he dropped you. It might have looked bad from someone elses perspective on treating a husband and wife for pain..
