Neurologist Suggested Nerve Block

The new Neurologist my GP sent me to was very thorough and had a great bedside manner. He suggested I go to this 'comprehensive pain management' hospital where a trained PM doctor who is also a Neurologist, will do a Temporary Nerve Block to my Trigeminal Nerve. They will be going through my upper maxillary cavity in my gums.

Of course, I'm scared as all get out! But at this point, I've taken every common medicine for this condition imaginable and to no avail.

I'll make an appt. with this Nerve Block doctor and possibly get a second opinion. But somethings got to give at this point.

BTW- I hope everyone is well. Its been awhile since I've been on and am catching up on reading posts. Love and healing vibes to all!

Thanks Paula! I'll fill you in when I make the appt.

I'm scared, but it's something that I haven't tried. People get nerve blocks all the time in their back, but this one is in my FACE! I'm just worried it will make the pain worst. I'm kinda of a negative thinker when it comes to operations/procedures! :-)

I suppose you have looked up the regular websites for information.
For those of us who don't know anything about this condition, there is a brief explanation at http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/trigeminal-neuralgia/DS00446 with a number of possible treatments on the "treatment" page.
I think I'd get at least a second opinion after reading the many possible ways to treat this.

Thanks for the link. Oh yes, I've had 11 yrs to read up on TN. I got it in '99! I have the "atypical" TN though...where the pain is constant and not i intermittent. The docitors always call it Trigeminal Neuralgia and even put that on my forms, orders, patient receipts etc. I guess it falls under that category enough.

The Neurologists I've seen do not want to do any Gamma, MVD, etc. due to the fact that mine is the 'atypical form'. And this new Neurologist I went to did tell me to get a second opinion from a Neurosurgeon in the TX Medical Center (so your advise is absolutely feasible).

There's a lot of difference between a neurologist and a neurosurgeon. I think I'd consult the neurosurgeon.

Does the neurologist want you to get a temporary block or something more permanent like a rhizotomy? I'd be talking to someone who could answer all the questions I don't know enough to ask.

I am not familiar with this type of block but I have seen a couple pain/anestesologist doctors and have had a couple procedures. I am big on 2nd opinions which often turn into 3rd because the 2 first ones said different. I hope what ever you do you get relief.
