So I started methotrexate last sat. It has been ok to me so far. Next dose is scheduled for tonight. Let me start by saying I know none of you are Dr.'s and will not substitute your opinions or experiences for fact. My hubby rented a cabin for us for spring break..well I would like to go out with him and have drinks possibly while we are there sooooo...can you ever drink? I know what the Rhuemy told me, and the pamplet and I am probably answereing my own question but I just wanted to know. It's not a major deal but I still thought either going out or staying home having a bottle of wine in the hot tub might be fun blush Opinions? Comments? Thanks, Heather

Of course in the end the decision is yours, but after reading up on this medication I certainly would not drink while taking it as it appears to be rather hard on the liver and as alcohol can be too it could provide a double whammy to it.

I am sure that you know that there are several non-alcoholic beers and wines available on the market. I am not much for wine but I have drank some of the beers and they are not that bad.

Personally, I don't think one glass would hurt. I don't drink but I was told if I wanted a glass of wine every once in awhile, it would be fine. ;)

Thank you both. You both gave opposite but sound advice. I just have those mixed feelings. I think I should be able to have a small glass once in a blue moon, and don't get me wrong I am not a drinker but every once in awhile. I also don't want anything else to happen to me soo.. I will consider what both of you said. Thanks. Heather

I also find this a dilemma from time to time. Almost all medications say not to mix them with alcohol. Some are hard on your liver and some interfere with the drug action and some cause bleeding. You actually aren't even suppose to take tylenol for hang overs. I did for most of my college and university years until I learned this piece of trivia.

I am not on the drug that you mentioned, but I have had a conservative amount of alcohol with meds that warn against. I have diabetes as well as chronic pain, so I have been told "no" to many things in life and have done them anyways. scool not sure if you want to take advice from a rebel without a cause!

You could check in with your pharmacist and ask about having a glass of wine. They know more than doctors do about side effects, etc. so that's a valued source of information.

I'm new to this having looked for years, so I'm very pleased to be here but not sure how it all works-please bear with me! I too am On a vast array of meds& the last time I had any wine was @5/6years ago& after2 sips I was face down out for the count in my dinner(not a Pretty site)&tried again in case this was a fluke but same result(minus the dinner!). So having hopefully amused you a bit, I agree it depends on the person but I would advise caution, slow sips&see how you go. I hope you have a wonderful break, relax&enjoy x

Thanks to all of you!! I love a rebel without a cause as I have been known to be one myself from time to time. I too have had a drink or to with some meds that say do not drink. this one is the first where the DR. actually asked if I drank and told me not to. I have read other post from people that say they do occasionally drink with it.
I hadn't thought about calling the pharmacist to ask him. That is a real good idea. I have called our local pharmacist several times for questions, about the meds. and I think it would be a good idea to do that.

tongue :-) You have picked the best place to come to. i have gotten so much advice and been able to vent without judgement. there are a lot of different forums out there in the internet world but none compare to this one, honest!! You posted just right. I will, after I talk to the pharmacist, take it slow. I need to. I worry how it will effect my liver, that is my big thing. I felt sick to my stomach earlier and hadn't even taken my meds yet. I had forgot to drink my water so blahhh skull I didn't think it would effect me 7 days later but as soon as I started drinking the water I felt better. Keep answering post and post too!

My experiences with meds (not MTX) and alcohol are similar to scooterchic's. Three of my medications state explicitly not to have alcohol while taking them and though I don't drink I was making brandy custard and a fruit cake (using sherry) over the Christmas holidays - just the alcohol fumes cooking out were enough to make me tipsy and tasting the mix had me reeling. Needless to say, I don't dare have even a sip of wine.

I think that Pam's advice is sound - pharmacists do know a lot about side effects and usually have a database on hand - particularly as you are on a number of different medications.

Thanks for the advice! Wow I have never had that effect from alchohol but i know that my mother does. I was so sick yesterday just from forgetting the water that i am very leery though. I waited to take the methotrexate until today and so far had to take nausea med because the room was spinning. So later on i will call the pharmacist and ask. Thank you. Heather
