....and now!.... as Paul Harvey used to say "Here's the rest of the story!"
Well..after a couple of nights searching the trees and weeds on the "chicken ranch"....We just could not find "Petey" anywhere, although I could hear him crowing everyonce in a while. So, I'm thinking at least we have one in the coop, and after a few days, surley his (Red's) homing instinct will click in...and my plan was to let him out this weekend for a Bug stroll.
Surley he would undertsand that his scratch and water were in the coop, and return there every night! Well!...that was the plan anyway!
So!...have any of you had, or have had a child, that you told them NOT,... to do something, and they ignore you're words with a smiling defiance? grrrr! GRRR! Seems like,... we have one of those too! Our son (10yr), loves to explore everything, and often times expolres himself right into trouble or a pickel of sorts.
Well, when we got the Roosters, I clearly told him not to open the lid of the coop, and his mother twice told him the same thing. Now after the speech, one would be thinking were safe right! WRONG!
......Yesterday, as I walked into the house, I noticed that him and his mother,... hovered over the kitchen table frantically drawing up plans on a piece of paper, to catch a chicken. I said "watcha up to?" and no responce!.....I instantly got a sinking feeling, and turned towards the sliding glass door, only to see the lid wide open on the "chicken coop!"....and not a Rooster to been seen anywhere! grrrr! GRRR! I guess he said,.. he was trying to pet him, and did not realize, that Roosters are smart.
....all I can say it was lucky for him,... that it was his Birthday!
So now both Petey and Red are out on the lamb, hunting for fish bait (worms) together like long lost friends. Truly the old saying "Birds of a feather flock together" is ringing in my ears at the moment. I swear I heard them late last night,...crowing a famiular tune "Catch me if you Can!"
Now, after a cooling down period, I have come to the conclusion, that no harm was really done, as I had planned on letting them out to free range anyway's....what really bothered me is that my son disobeyed us both.
The plan now, is to build a "Chicken Tractor" and purchase a few hen's for egg laying. Then maybe the roosters will join them. That should make for another story later!
I hope you all have enjoyed our experience, and I'm sure many of you have simular stories to tell. Please do so here on this thread.
One more thing, I named the Roosters after people I admire, and am in no way poking fun at them. We love our new Roosters, and our CP friends as well.
Animals, can have a very healing and or calming effect for many a CP patient. They do for me!
Thanks for taking the time to read this adventure of ours, and hope you all are doing well today.
