I can't remember if we've talked about this before or not, here on the board. 

But have any of you been called to jury duty while dealing w/ your chronic health/pain issues??

I cannot believe I've been summoned to jury duty for the 8th time in 10 years..... :)  I think they really want me!! :)


If I had a "normal" life - I'd love to serve; that's the thing.  Obviously.... I'm a FT mom to 8 kids - that in itself, I can't serve.  But it's also my pain issues (I can't sit for more than 15 minutes)... and my heart issues.... I could go on and on. 

I *could* mark on here about having too many dependents, etc.  But I'm going to drop it off at my PM doc, for him to sign to excuse me.  For some reason, I just think that's the best path to go.....

Just wondered if anyone else has been called to jury duty... if you did/didn't serve... etc.

Yes, I was called three times while my daughter was really young
So is used that and that she had a heart condition, which is true twice
and once I was did not get picked (which was good, but I had to wait ...
Jury duty is not easy for us with chronic pain, if I get called again,
I'll just say I can't sit still long enough without having to take a break...
which is also true...
This year two week after my daughter got home from University she had a summons, it made me mad
and she got called to serve lucky, it lasted only a day... I depend on her to drive me on long doctor trips,
it's easier on me, if I can get her help....
Yes.. if you can't sit still for a long period then use a doctor excuse...
Otherwise, a judge would be upset for having to take a lot of breaks in a case.

Pebbles... My husband, during our 18 years marriage - has never gotten asked to serve.  I *think* it's a random selection process, through DMV, etc.   Like I said, though, I've been asked 8 times in 10 years.... and I *think* about 3 other times before that. 

I qualify medically as permanently disabled.... and I *think* my doctor put that in writing on my last summons.  But I've been called again... so I don't know if it matters or what. 

It's weird..... so it's off to get this filled out until the next time I'm asked, I guess!  smilewinkgrin   --Tina

I got picked a few months ago. I called the jury selection board the very next day and explained that my health condition presented problems with me serving. I also sent a letter in with the card they sent explaining the same thing. They then sent me a form for my doctor to fill out stating why I should be excused from serving. She did and that was that. Excused.

Here in Ohio getting picked to serve is something that is drawn from voter registration banks. If you are not a registered voter you do not get jury duty.

I have never been called either, not sure what is up with that. My poor mother in law was called 5 times in 5 years before she passed away. She was easily excused just by filing out the medical area.

         I have been called, but did not have to serve. It bothered me that I might not be able to make a sound decision, and pay attention to all the facts in the case, because of the pain med's. Hope that makes some sense to you.

I have been called, but I have not served. I think I may have sent a copy of my handicap placard with the response card.

Hi Flower....

That's a good idea; I might do the same (copy of the placard).

I'm not worried about being excused.... I know I will be.  I was just curious about others.... and, also, I think it's funny that I've been called so many times. 

Also - me being "permanently disabled" is not going to change (hence, the word "permanent"!)....  so it would be nice if I could somehow work that into the system. 

I'm in California... and I know they call people primarily from DMV, @ random.

I was called once a very long time ago, and I reported to the court house, when all of us ( potential jurors) was there assembled in court, the judge asked if any of us had a valid reason why we should not be able to serve on jury duty, and I told him my reasons and then I was excused. A short time  later ( several months ) I receive another summons for jury duty, I called the court house, and they explained what I needed to do, like like Jim1969 I got the form and gave it to my PM Doctor to fill out, and then I was never summons again.  I have no problem (morally or mentally) with serving on a jury, but Physically  I know I just could not sit more than a few minutes, without being in extreme pain. I have seen allot of people  try to get out of jury duty, and they will use just about any excuse they can come up with to do it. Personally I think it would be an honor to serve on a jury, and I wish I could serve as a juror, and  participate in our judicial process.  Just another thing that CP takes away from us!

Yep, I agree w/ you - I would love to serve, too... just as a means of community service and because I think it would be interesting.  So, I *wish* I could serve, too.

Hey Tina, I have been called 2 times, both times I called or wrote and explained I was disabled and had doctor reports to show.

The first one is when I lived in PG county, we moved into Montgomery County just recently and simply had to write on the form, I was disable, gave my pm doctors name address and phone number, I received a letter back stating I no longer would even be asked to jury duty due to disability.

So let them know you are disabled, In Maryland at least since I am disabled, I know longer have to worry about being called.

Ok, if that doesnt work, take all 8 kids with you when you go in, I am sure it will only take minutes for them to tell you to go home, lol.

I always wanted to serve jury duty as I read law books and follow trials as an academic, however after 3 neck fussiion surgeries and no ability to sit still I get called.  My doctor wrote me a note on his prescription pad exempting me from any future jury duty.

Hi Tina, yes I have received many jury summons but was never picked to serve, in fact none of us that worked in the legal field were ever picked to serve on a jury, we always got dismissed. After I became disabled I still got the jury summons, because you are picked here because of being a registered voter. My dr always wrote a short note on a script pad that I was physically unable to serve on a jury and all I had to do was mail that to them. I have sat through a lot of trials but never made it to serve on a jury, lol.

Illinois used to select people for jury duty from those who were registered to vote. After seeing drops in voter registration and having a lot of complaints about everyone who never had to serve because they elected not to register the state tied selection into driver's license and state issued ID cards.

Got called for Jury Duty around the first part of this year. Knowing that I could not make a sound decision and with my back not being able to sit long, I called my doc and had them send a letter. Sent it to the court house and they took me off the list for good.

Sucks to not be able to do it, but I knew that it would be very difficult. Been called twice now, once in WY and once here.

I got called for jury mduty in Washington state before I had the fall. I was already disabled because of depression and anxiety. I don't remember how, but I let them know that I was disabled and they excused me.

I haven't been called here in NY so far. I can't believe we have been living here 10 years. It doesn't seem like it.

I hope everyone is having a low pain evening.

you can easily get out of juey duty for medical reasons...may not even need a doc note. i've been called a few times and think it would be really interesting to serve, but i have crohn's disease and the chances of me being able to sit there without running to the bathroom multiple times is not really realistic...

Hello, and yes I was summoned years ago...I wrote back to them about my bowel problems and that there is no way I could do it as I couldn't control my bowels. I've never been requested since then and this was when my 2nd was born and nursing. Oh, and I also said I was nursing a 3-week old baby.
