Good AM, all! I am a chronic pain sufferer with bilateral pheraminal stenosis, degenerative arthritis and nerve pain, stemming from a 1993 MVA that fractured C5, C6 and C7 and herniated two discs fully in my lower back. I suffer from migraines and severe lower back and neck pain, with numbness and burning in my right leg and arm.
I have been on 490 mg of Kadian per day for several years,'along with topomax and radiofrequency ablations (rhyzotomies) and epidurals to back and neck, every 6 mos or so, just so I can help raise my one-year-old son. I try to be as active a father as possible, fighting through the pain. I am a 46. I am looking to move and thus possibly switching to a new interventional pain doc. He favors a spinal morphine pump over Kadian. His view is that he can run a two- day, in hospital trial, installing a morphine catheter, then weening off the Kadian.
If it gives relief,'then install the pump and go off oral meds altogether, with a remote booster shot for breakthrough. He says a high daily pump dose of around 4 or 5 mg would be equiv to the 490 mg of Kadian because it is delivered directly to the spine and not through the liver, heart, brain, etc. I like the idea of not having to take pills, not having them around children, and avoiding the systemic affects. But I am very much afraid of withdrawal when he "weens" me off of Kadian. Can anyone speak from experience? Sorry for the long post!
