Do Fentanyl patches make you sweat???

Hi,
Quick question, has anyone noticed while taking the fentanyl patch, an unusual amount of sweating?
I sweat a lot now on my face like never before, and if I just do minor things, I am sweating up a storm.
I have used the patches for over 2 years started at 10 or 15, then 25, 50 and now 75, I've been on 75 for
over 1 year. Just wondered if anyone else experiences this, or am I going thru the beginning stages of
menopause?

Hi Monica, alot of the narcotics can cause a person to sweat. I did when using Fentanyl and now I am on Dilaudid for BT pain and its the same way. Just another side affect to deal with. I take cool showers and as soon as I start drying off, my head will be drenched with sweat. Its strange because when I do to the beauty shop and they wash & dry my hair I have no trouble. I have a horrible time trying to get my hair dry because of this. I have a pump now and this started after the pump was put in.

The pain meds don't make me sweat as much as they make me feet hot, which can sometimes lead to sweating more BUT I live in FL so...unless its winter time I don't notice very often.

I am on fentanyl patches and have been for the past 2 summers, and I always sweat more on them than before. I also had excessive sweating with Vicodin or oxycodone. Like Suzie, I take cool showers. I also use a fan directly on me when I am in the house, or my sons get frozen out by the air conditioner, and its expensive to keep it cool in our home.

The simple answer for me is - yes. The higher the dose, the more I sweat. Fentanyl seems to be worse w/ this than other narcotics (just for me).

I agree with Tina here….and yes other med's can make you sweat. I have woken up totally covered in sweat….like I had just taken a shower…or we the bed! It can be very weird to wake up to that.

I too had a big problem with sweating like a faucet after being put on the Duragesic patch. I've found great relief (almost no sweats now...YAY!!) from an IV of Myers Cocktail. (links deleted)

I've also used ionic magnesium 1ml 2-3 times per day that has also cut the sweating to nothing. It is much more cost effective ($4.87 for 400mg 2fl oz) than the Myers Cocktail ($80 per IV at Drs office). (links deleted)

Regular oral magnesium tablets won't give you the same benefit. Not sure why, REALLY HAPPY to be sweat/chill free. Hope others will check out the links (and/or do addl research) and get similar benefit.

Thank you so much for posting that thread. For years I have had issues with sweating. I am of that certain age where I thought it was down to something else! I have been back and forwards to my GP, on different HRT, to no avail. I hadn't even considered that fentanyl was responsible, my GP never mentioned this.

Like Susie says, I have a problem drying my hair, have to have a fan facing me all the time. Wow, you have solved a problem for me that I have been dealing with for years! Funnily enough I have reduced my fentanyl from 75mcg to 25mcg, and it had improved the sweating, but I didn't connect the two. It just happened to coincide with the weather becoming cooler.

I am happy to report, it seems to have temp gone away. I don't know why but I am happy it has left me for now!

As mentioned before, I've had this issue severely in the past! But I'm glad to say that I'm back on the oral fentanyl - and though my body temp IS higher than normal, I'm not sweating this time around. Don't know if my body finally adapted or what... just glad this annoying (and embarrassing) side effect is much, much better.

When I first started the fentanyl patch I remember I would sweat really bad at night time while sleeping. I even told my doctor when it would make me sweat I could actually smell the fentanyl coming out of my pores and skin. This only lasted a few weeks tho then went away.

hi-I've been losing my mind with profuse sweating .Wet hair-dripping every where, changing my shirt 10 times a day.I've just started thinking the patch is the cause-and quite frankly, the sweating is worse than the pain!

Oh, one last thing - YES, fentanyl can cause intense sweating.... actually, all narcotics can.... especially at the higher doses or until your body adapts to a new med/dose. It's embarrassing and frustrating, for sure!
