Shell74,
I was reading your post about liquid meds. I too had gastric bypass and now I'm going from the fentanyl patches , which I have been on since my bypass almost five years ago, to oral meds. The first one I tried was MS Contin and it worked really good. The problem was, after three weeks I was having chest pain from reflux and severe stomach pain. So, I went from that to a 75 mcg patch, which was higher than before. That didn't work for the pain either. Now I'm trying exalgo er for two weeks and its not working either. I go back to pm tomorrow and I guess I have to tell them that my intestines are just not absorbing it, due to the bypass. That's why I was asking about the oral meds and absorption...

I dont feel that my fentanyl is working as well since I lost the weight. The pm drs response is that I dont have the same fat layers which are required for the proper absorbtion of the med. We have tried to switch to Butrans but the insurance says no.
The liquid oxy works well, but it is short lived. Sort of like alcohol with bypass, hits quick then leaves. I tend to use it if I have a high pain level and I need to get something done. It gets me thru making dinner, laundry, cleaning or getting the stepgrandsons bath done. Its one reason why he wrote for every 4 hours as needed. Its nice because I can take anywhere from 10-20mg at a time per my script
(or less if I want). The bad thing is that it is very hard to find. My two local pharmacies now stock it since I have gotten it almost every month for the last two years.
Matt, I was told that I cant take extended release meds after bypass because they didnt have the chance to absorb. I know all of the surgeons and programs have different recommendations. What has your dr said?
