increased pain from esi

Im having increased pain from the esi not relieved by lortab. I have tried switching from ice and heat . No help at all. I have a follow up with my pm on Thursday. I have a ? I went to see my pcp for my neck pain he gave me a script for tramadol but I didnt fill it cause of the pain contract. Would filling the tramadol be breaking my pain contract. I didnt fill it cause its a thin like between tramadol is a narcotic or not a narcotic.

hi ksd, im sorry you are still having pain from the esi. Tramadol is not a narcotic. It does treat pain but is not considered a narcotic. I tried taking it but it didn help me. I have read other posts from different people. what i read, they said it worked as long as it was taken along with the bt med. Maybe it would help you. Can you not call your pm anh ask them if thats what you should do? janet

Many states now have Tramadol as a controlled substance so I would absolutely NOT fill this med unless you specifically speak with your PM on the phone (not the nurse) or wait to see him on Thursday.

Now that you have a PM, he is the one treating your pain....so going to see your primary to seek out pain meds or treatment is something that may cause them to think you are now "Dr. shopping". As this is getting pain meds (any kind) from two Drs..

Did you make sure to tell your Primary that you are on the Lortab and being treated by a PM now? The reason I ask is that the two Drs. may speak with one another.

As many of us wrote to you on your ESI threads....there is sometimes a bit of more pain after the shot and it takes a few days for the steroids to start working.

I know it's hard when you are in pain but you need to just hang in there and make sure that you don't do anything that may ruin your situation with the PM because once a red flag goes on someone's medical record, then every Dr. will see this and will make it even harder to get pain mgmt. treatment from anyone.

I would keep up with the alternating ice and heat and the steroids should start working little by little. I can't remember if this PM switched you to a different muscle relaxer or not?

Those are just my thoughts...Hope you start getting some relief!

Tramadol won't effect your pain contract. When I was on it, I could get it filled with no problem. Like SnowBunny said, you need to let both your doctors know what's going on and what you're doing or they could cut you off completely.

If you're having pain, that should be taken care of by your PM doctor not your primary.

Kimber ,is this your first time having eppies done? It is common to hurt more for a few days after having them done so this is normal. Keep alternating the heat/ice for the time being.

I believe Tramadol is given for pain, therefore, yes you would be breaking your contract if it states not to accept pain meds from 2 different drs. I would not mess around with this unless you want to risk getting in trouble and perhaps end up without a PM dr.

Hi ksd, I personally wouldn't fill it without a call and permission from your PM. That would also alert them to the fact that your Lortab isn't covering your pain, and tgey may have something else in mind to help you in the interim.

I too, wouldn't fill it without checking with your PM, just to be on the safe side. It's a controlled med where I live. Good luck with your pain situation.

…I agree with everyone else as well!….The PM won't take kindly to you filling the script, and you might be booted.

To fill it as a pain med you could be booted.

The only exception my Dr makes is, for example, I have a bad case of the crud. Saw my pcp today and got 2 shots and two prescriptions. One of them was cough syrup/codeine. I have 24 hours to notify my PM and it is okay.

I had rotator cuff surgery last year. I asked my PM about pain control. He wanted my surgeon to handle that until I was dismissed. I just had to let them know what I was taking and how much.

I would never have a pain med filled without them knowing about it first.

My intention is not to dr shop . my intention was my pcp to find out why I was having neck pain that was causing numbness and tingling in my hands and dropping things. My intention was for my pcp to order a ct scan to find out why. If I was really dr shopping I would of filled the script for tramadol which I didnt . Im not that stupid to fill a script for tramadol under a pain contract. I have been in chronic pain for over 20 yrs. I know how a pain contract works. I even have the script to show my pm that I didnt fill it. My pcp is the one that will order tests to find out why im having neck pain. if the pm was ordering test type he would of ordered a new ct on my first visit for my lumbar back problems. I want to know why im having neck pain and hand issues instead of getting increased pain meds from my pm. to the others my pm upped my appt to today instead of thursday. First I got jumped cause I couldnt be in real pain cause im on taking lortab and now cause I asked if tramadol was a controlled subatance im dr. shopping. I have been attacked since coming back here. this forum is not what it use to be. People supported each other not attack each other. I just ask a simple ? as I wrote in my orginal post I didnt fill the tramadol .

I dont think anyone is jumping on you or accusing you of dr shopping.

I think the miscommunication is arising from the part of your first post where you said "Would filling the tramadol be breaking my pain contract."

People are thinking you're asking a question and trying to answer you.

Hence the advice that if you did fill it, it could be mistaken as dr shopping since you're under the PM contract and tramadol is seen as a pain medication.

When I read your post the first time, I actually thought you said "Filling the tramadol would be breaking my pain contract"

So I was pretty confused with the responses as well until I re-read it and my eyes and brain caught up!

We try to be supportive and offer the best advice that we can, but we're human, and with text sometimes what we meant to say and what it sounds like when other people are reading it are not the same.

I'm not sure why you think you are being attacked? I, and many others have known you for years now (under your other screen names) and have always tried to help any way we can.

You asked us whether you think you should fill the Tramadol or not and would it break your contract.

I can speak for myself and wrote what it MAY look like or seem to the Drs....not what I personally thought you were doing. And if you read my post carefully you will see this.

I always give advice about medication questions like this (from anyone) what the view is from the Dr. as I am friends with my PM outside of our appts. and we have discussed things at length on this subject.

You are new to this PM Dr. and he doesn't know you at all. So that is why I said that it could look bad if you fill another pain med or went to another Dr. for pain management. He has prescribed you pain meds, he has done the ESI...I see him taking the normal steps to try and treat you.

We are just trying to say that it's one thing to ask for tests from your Primary or other Drs.....but taking prescriptions for anything controlled "could" cause issues. This point was made only to help you understand that it's different once you enter the world of actual Pain Mgmt. with contracts involved.

You can certainly choose to do whatever you wish. I was just giving my thoughts based on knowing Tramadol is a controlled substance in most states and it does effect one's pain contract in those states so I wanted to make sure you knew this so it wouldn't accidentally cause you any harm or treatment down the road.

I am a bit offended in that you don't know most of us by now after all the years through your gall bladder surgery, Fibro, and back/neck issues.

I don't see one post in this thread accusing you of anything negative or attacking you so it's sad that you would say this about people who have tried to help...

Kimber no one here is accusing you of dr shopping. I think what was meant was since you accepted a script for pain med from your PCP your PM dr could consider this dr shopping. ...Susie
