Wow, this one has really hit home. My daughter is 13 and just had the big chapel service on drugs and alcohol. She lost it when she got home and she was so upset at school that she would not speak to anyone.
She was very angry because nobody seemed to take the person in pain into consideration. It's the same way in my own family too, so she's honestly sick of hearing it.
My daughter is well aware of alcohol and how it affects the family. She lives with me and her father (who is a functioning alcoholic...yes....true alcoholic). We go to al anon (or at least we did until a couple of weeks ago when it became more about
people enjoying hearing themselves talk and began giving nothing to help the families of alcoholics....so we are looking for a new group after a couple of weeks to get back on track). The literature is honestly wonderful and has been a great help in my family.
She becomes almost physically shaken when they start on the evils of prescript
ion meds because she has lived with the pain that broke her heart to see and she has seen the aftermath of all of the surgery, injections, RFA's, tens unit sessions, Biofreeze uses, heat, ice, and now the SCS. She knows firsthand what life is like if I don't have medication to ease pain and what happens if too much has been taken (before I had my phone scheduler to keep up with what is taken and when). She knows I don't like to take meds that make me feel out of control and that I never drink because I take meds and that is not safe. I also don't drink because it is an unhealthy thing in my family. Thankfully great progress has been made since she really had to learn about
alcohol the hard way.
She explains that it makes her feel dirty when they call everyone who uses meds an addict and she wants to scram that they don't understand the life of someone in pain.
I too think the schools vilify things they have no busines discussing with young children. We are the parents and should be able to teach our children to have compassion for the hurting and to refrain from using all meds or alcohol.
I also think teaching about
things piques interest.
Oh Vickie, I am sooo sorry about
your daughter. She really has had it tough. I pray she will not be set back by this.
