I just read this article and it worries me. I haven't been dealing with chronic pain that long, but have had a lot of difficulties already because of ignorance. I don't the future to be filled with even more ignorance about addiction, dependence and pain.

Ignorance about chronic pain and the use of opioid pain medications is rampant in both the public and medical communities not to mention other sectors of society such as law enforcement and government. This problem is greatly compounded by half truths reported on through the media. Very rarely are there news reports regarding people who live in pain and who have jumped through all of the hoops to treat their condition(s) before going to narcotic pain meds in order to have some quality to their lives.

Many of us who do suffer from CP often write letters to the reporters who do an unfair job about reporting about medications, CP, etc. We also often comment on these articles if possible and write letters to our Senators and Reps at both the state and federal levels. All of this is in hopes of both educating people as well as making the other side of these issues known.

Don't you love how some people said they would use other things to treat their chronic pain, well its easy to say that because they've never EXPERIENCED chronic pain. Sorry, this kind of thing just drives me nuts.

I think the other thing is that people see opiates and immediately assume you get high and happy off them, when we all know that you get no high when you've been using them for a week or so and that the side effects are horrible sometimes. There's a huge difference between using them as prescribed or being silly with them or abusing them for recreation. I've never been a recreational drug user so I'm in no position to comment on how their drug use affects them, just like people who have the luck to be healthy have no understanding of just how my health and my meds affect me.

Surveys like this just convey general ignorance. People might say "well I had that broken arm for 3 months!". Congratulations. You knew that pain would get better every day and eventually go away. There's one hell of a difference to pain that will be there and could be good, bad or the same as yesterday but what you do know is it WILL be there.

Also, I went through pretty much all of the crap on that list of "other things I'd try" before getting prescribed strong opiates. None of it worked.

This sort of thing just drives me crazy. Addiction and dependence are totally different but yet they still see it as the same thing. They never talk about other medications that people become dependent upon and that they would have withdrawal symptoms from going off of them. Our body gets used to having it so of course it's going to wig out when we stop feeding it. I know that I have never gotten "high" off of my meds.

Also as far as the other things that they suggest we try first such as pt, exercise, diet etc. Don't they realize that we have tried everything before ever seeking pain meds? The majority of people that I know that are suffering from chronic pain have been very strong willed people that jumped through all the hoops just like I did before saying okay enough is enough, I need some help.

They also don't take into account the number of errors that pharmacies make, doctors make, nurses etc. etc. with prescriptions. When a doctor only has ten minutes for a patient to examine, diagnose, treat etc. errors are made. Then we get the busy pharmacist that has hundreds of orders to fill so again more errors and this is leading to a lot of deaths. Medication mixups, wrong doses, interactions not looked at and so many more.

Okay I'm done ranting and I will go find a happy place but I really wish people would stop being so stupid and do a little research before jumping at the chance to make life even harder for us than it is right now.

Once again, although I wish no harm to anyone, but walk in our shoes for 30 minutes and then tell us how you feel. The ignorance of persons who do not suffer this life long disease have know idea what its like to lose the life you once had and to suffer through the pain, with the meds we get we still have pain, what we use numbs some of the pain to make life at least a little less tolerable than having nothing.
