I was recently put on a low dose of pain medication, and it's been helpful, but I feel like something is missing. I take it for my back and hips. I'm interested in using some type of cream or gel on my lower back but have problems with the OTC ones that contain menthol. They hurt my skin and don't help. Are there topical prescript
ion products other than lidocaine? If so, has anyone had and success with them? I have some lidocaine patches, and plan on trying one later today (after I wake up for the day that is). I'm just not real fond of patch things. Adhesive stuff irritates me.

Voltaren is a prescript
ion Med that also comes in a gel and I've had some success with it and recall a few folks here say they have as well. It has no mentholated properties.
Try entering the Voltaren in the forums search features and see what pops up

I use the lidocaine patches, but I also use Voltaren gel. I actually like the gel better because I can cover more real estate, and it works fairly well for reducing pain. Sometimes I spread it too thin, trying to cover TOO much area, then it's not as great, but that's my fault really.

Thank you.
The only thing I've heard about
had something to do with gabapentin, which I figured would be bad since the pill form gave me a rash.

Hi Sunny,
I agree, Voltaren is good. It's stronger than the Olfen gel as well. I use Biofreeze on my neck but it contains menthol.
Hope you find something you can use.

I've had a mix of pain creams over the years and alternate volteran and aspercream neither of these has menthol, and once a doctor made me a special mix that helped. I also have trouble with menthol but if my joint is burning in pain, then I have to use something with menthol and use it sparingly along with an ice packs...and then I wash it off as soon as I get relief...Many many well wishes also make a note to tell your doctor about
the menthol allergy or reactions...

Using a compounded transdermal pain cream would be a better idea for any particular person suffering from neck pain.

Years ago my doc gave me a compounded pain crème. It doesn't have a name but I can tell you what's in it and it is a miracle worker. I've tried other crèmes, but nothing compares to this one. It has 5 ingredients : Ibuprofen 2%, Ketoprofen 5%, Ketamine (no idea what percentage), Amiltriptyline 2% and Carbazapine 2%. Any compounding pharmacy can make it.

I agree Boxerlover I too just got a compounded cream and so far I like it but- the amount per month is very small (for the amount I would like to use it) and the other down side was cost- had to pay $85 out of pocket as it wasn't covered under my health insurance- of course!
My compound has Amitriptyline30, Clonidine2, Gababentin60, Melenamic Acid10, Ketamine100, Lidocaine20
As for OTC (over the counter) muscle creams/rubs I LOVE: Mission Max Muscle Rehab roll-on gel.... it has arnica and 9% menthol- which I know you were staying away from but I thought I would add for others who like the menthol

VoltAren gel works great for my OA, it does have a strong ammonia smell, so be wary of that. It goes away after a bit.

I've got Voltaron gel and Pensaid liquid.I like the Pensaid better. It absorbs quicker. An Orthopecic Surgeon wrote me some Ketaprophen Compounded Cream but my insuarance didn't cover it and it was very expensive.
There are some compounds than contain a little morphine or hydrocodone.

I make my own pain oils from essential oils. It numbed up my spine for a couple hours and I have a couple different blend I and my in-laws use. My mother and mother in law both love the cinnamon bark one but I prefer the menthol one. My grandmother in law likes a cedar bark citrus blend. There are different blend because we all have different body types but the pain essential oils are niaouli oil and helichrysum oil. The extra oils help add a way to get into your system.

I would ask ur doctor to have a cream compounded for you by a pharmacy. mine has 5% ketamine 5% litocaine10% gabapentin 5% diclo sodium 5% cyclobenzaprine. It works wonders.
