What is Acetaminophen prescribed for?

Hello, I am surprised they gave her tylenol which is what acetaminophen is. Most times nsaids are given for arthritis rather than tylenol. Nsaids are prescribed for swelling. There are many different medicines for arthritis both over the counter and prescription. If you go with her to her doctor ask about the usual medicines for arthritis, and tylenol is not one of them.

If she has problems with taking aspirin products (which I myself do) there are also gels and creams to help. I use Volteren which is a gel for my arthritis in my hips and elsewhere.

Acetaminophen is usually given in conjunction with pain medication to help act as a booster of sorts. The theory is that taking the two together will provide more relief than either medication would provide alone.

Ultracet is actually the name of the pill that contains both tramadol and acetaminophen together but sometimes that can be harder to find, so taking both pills seperately but at the same time can provide the same result as taking Ultracet.

Both medications are commonly used in the treatment of arthritis, though neither one is a "cure" by any means.

I hope that using them gives your mother some relief.

It's true tylenol is in a number of pain medications, but to use it alone as a script it's cheaper to buy it off the shelf..I would still ask your mom's doctor about it...and I never questioned the tramadol but it's depends on the arthritis your treating...and you can always get a second opinion from another doctor but the tylenol script vs shelf since it's the same doseage as the shelf it's probably better to just get it off the shelf at the pharmacy...

I don't think she means he prescribed just tylenol and just tramadol. I went back and read it several times and the wordings a little confusing but I think she's reading of the insert or information paper from pharmacy.

Meaning there is 325mgs of aceteminophen and 37.5 tramadol equaling Ultracet.

Hello Frejya and sorry I think we got sidetracked with the confusion about the Med.

To answer your question, with arthritis from time to time a joint will become inflammed more then usual. Its possible she over extended it or something irritated the already arthritic joint or its just a progression in disease. Pain of course will ensue with the changes and swelling.

She is getting relief because ultracet is a combination of two meds and used to treat moderate pain. Most Drs would have also added an anti-inflamatory Med to settle down the swelling such as ibuprofen. I have no way of knowing why they didn't.

Thank you all for your valuable replies. After all the replies I can say that my mother has been prescribed the correct medicines but unfortunately, she has almost no relief till date. When she took the drug for 1 or 2 days she was relieved- but now its all the same. Sometimes she says that she has extreme pain in her muscles below and above her knee and sometimes in the bone itself. I don't understand what I can do to get some relief to her.

Can any type of exercise help her although the doc had asked her to do some simple exercises which have not helped much. Thanks for any suggestions.

Yes, today I visited her doctor with the report of her Vitamin D test. It was just 16(deficient amount). Now the doc has prescribed her with Cholecalciferol (60,000 I.U.) to be taken once a week for 3 months. Hope she would be relieved now.
