Catheter out, YEAH! Now Neurontin side effects

I did get the foley out yesterday yeah. I was able to urinate, so I am hoping my bladder is going to continue to cooperate. I am still retaining but can empty more than 50% as of now so I will start self cath'ing next week. This isnt ideal but not horrible. Thank you so much for all the thoughts and prayers! I know I have been alittle absent here, just overwhelmed with everything going on. My PM dr mentioned that I should consider taking time off work, I only have about 15 days left for the school year, so I am hoping to make it till then. I was stable for so long, this is really frustrating me greatly.

I started neurontin liquid while in the hospital after my fall on the 4th. We started with 200mg at bedtime and now changed to 250mg at 4 PM and 10PM. This is in an effort to reduce daytime side effects and avoid the zombie effect I experienced on nerve meds previously.

In the last 7 days I have gained 10 pounds, have constant aching chest/ arm pain and feel like dirt. Not to mention my pain levels have increased. I pulled out my side effects paper and those are all listed as serious side effects and to call the dr right away. Aarrgghh! Feel like I cant catch a break. I will be calling the doc once they open up, but just wondering if these are side effects that have gone away for others or is this just a med my body wont tolorate? shakehead

Nothing like getting a foley out - so that is great news! But I'm sorry you are still having issues..... and I DO understand the frustration -- especially when things had been going along ok.

RE: the Neurontin - I'm on 600mg, 3x daily. Although I need to go up higher on it (and have tried) - the higher dosages makes me gain weight. So, I do know that is a side effect.

You are on a relatively low amount.... I'm wondering if the weight gain and just not feeling well could be attributed to your hospital stay, etc. Every time I leave the hospital, it takes me a good week or two to get back on my feet.

BUT it could be the med, too! Just hard to know. You say your pain levels have increased.... are you seeing any benefit of the med yet? Any decrease in nerve pain? You haven't been on it very long, so it may just be too soon to tell. It's one of those meds that you need to be on for several weeks to a few months to get an accurate view of it. Unless, of course, you have SE's from the meds.

Shell, did you hear back from the dr? As far as weight gain goes, I am betting fluid retention is playing a big role right now. I retain fluid pretty bad & take diurectics for it.

So glad the foley was taken out. They kept threatening to put mine back in when I was in the hospital in March. I just told them to cool it & give me some time & mother nature would take care of things, lol.

Hi Shell,

I am soooo happy for you having that annoying (but necessary) cath removed. I have a love/hate relationship with them...lol

Seriously, I'm hoping they don't pop you back into the hospital with the weight gain. Like Susie, I'm afraid of the fluid retention and that the bladder is not releasing like it should, therefore opening up a chance for some serious infection. I sure hope not.

Please let us know what happens to you. You've been on my mind quite a bit lately!

The PM drs office was not to concerned about the weight gain or fatigue, the general chest aching comes and goes which they feel isnt a concern either. Of course if it continues or chest pain gets bad I need to call or go to the ER. Wondering if I should have called the urologist as well?

I havent noticed any benefit from the med yet, I do know I am on a very low dose and no where near a therapeutic level. The goal is that getting used to this level till the end of school then bumping it up once I am at home.

Hi Shell and glad to see your Foley free!! It always takes my bladder a few days to get back in the groove of things post catheter. It gets lazy I guess.

As for Neurontin and it's side effects? I didnt do well and had to go the lyrica. The fog never cleared on neurontin for me. Everything was like looking through a bottom of a jar. Really strange and annoying.

Have done great on the lyrica and never really had any side effects other then sleepy for the first month or so and for me that's more benefit then bothersome.

Hoping you continue to improve.

I have tried Lyrica, Neurontin and another one in the past and had those kind of side effects Vickie. I would give up before a week was thru because I couldnt be like that at work and while driving. I just really wanted to give this a good try this time. We thougt starting low for an extended amount of time may work.

Honestly, the afternoon and early evening is pretty bad with me having a very hard time staying awake, not sure why that is if I take meds at 4 and 10PM. Last night I fell asleep and missed the 10PM dose and I do feel a lot more of my nerve pain this morning than yesterday. This could be the med or could be a natural wax and wane that I experience typically, the verdict is still out. Just hoping for the best!

Morning Shell,

I'm so happy to hear that you are home and catheter free. I sure hope that you will be able to adjust to the neurontin. It does sound like you are ultra sensitive to it. Maybe, though taking it really slowly will allow you to stay on it.

I hope that today is a good day for you and that you are no longer having chest pain.

You'll be in my prayers and I hope you begin feeling better real soon.
