Hi to both of you. I realised the other day that I'd forgotten to come back with my lotion bar recipe for you both.

1/3 coconut oil
1/3 butter - I've used 50:50 Shea and Mango, but I think anything would work.
1/2 cup beeswax
Approx 4 ml oil blend (I went largely by scent)
1 tsp arnica infused oil

The oil combination I use - I've recently found out that it's very similar to Chinese 'White Flower Oil' - which is used among other things for pain relief.

I made up the oil blend with

20g Wintergreen Oil
14g Menthol Crystals
9g Eucalyptus Oil
6g Peppermint oil
4g Camphor Oil
4g Lavender Oil
4g Clove Bud Oil

I have a bottle of arnica-infused oil on hand - just made by steeping dried arnica flowers in olive oil for several weeks, then drained through a cheesecloth. I like it for making salves too, as it's meant to help with bruises and things like that.

To make the bars, just put the coconut oil, butter and wax in a microwave safe jug and melt. Add essential oils, stir and pour into a mould (e.g. an ice block tray) and allow to set.

Thanks Laura I know this wasn't for me, but I wrote it down as well. It sounds expensive. Is there an internet website, where the ingredients might be less expensive?

I love essential oils, but I apparently don't know how to use them correctly...lol. I've used them for freshening properties and now KNOW they will disintegrate anything hard plastic completely with even a drop.....well you live and learn I guess.

I have to admit I am a little afraid of mixing myself due to the damage I have done to certain things at home..like a vacuum cleaner i put a few drops in on a cotton ball to freshen the house....bad move!!!!!

Thank you for your recipe. At least I am sure this is safe!

If you mix it with a carrier oil and it's properly diluted you shouldn't have a problem. I make a pain relief blend of essential oils and they store in plastic bottles no problem. But we are talking 4oz carrier oil to maybe a hundred or so drops essential oil. I want to try this mix and add my pain relief oils to it to see if I can make a "wax on" pain bar. I also an trying her pain bar to see if it's as effective on my spine/nerve pain

Hi Loretta,

The oils are the expensive part... But you might be able to find "white flower oil"... The only real difference is that my combination has clove oil as well.

As for the base materials...if you are wanting to try making the bars...have a look for a site that sells soap making materials. I'd guess the prices would be comparable between the US and Australia but off the top of my head the butters are about $5/100g. I buy my coconut oil in bulk - several kgs at a time - but it works out at a couple of $$/100g.

RM - do you have a any sort of tablet? There are some good references round about online, but I've recently found that Amazon have some really good ebooks on using carrier oils, different essential oils and so on. Some are free, some only a dollar or two. I've made great use of them in learning to make different products.

Loretta, I'm still working on my site, but the 'production' side of things is going well - I've a few different types of soap, lip balm, body butter, moisturiser and looking at making bath boms too.

Thanks again for the info!!! I. Going to do some research into this to see what I can come up with. I honestly use Biofreeze the most of my pain relief gels, but the strengh is starting to need a power boost..lol.

Do you happen to know if adding a literal drop or two of peppermint oil or eucalyptus may help?
