Amatryptilene v's Nortryptilene

Hi All,

I'm new here & wonder if anyone has been down the same road as myself.

I was in hospital for 6 weeks in 2010 then 8 weeks just recently.

I'm now seeing a specialist for my pancreas & horse shoe kidney but they have also diagnosed me with Neuropathic Pain & I visit the Chronic Pain Team.

I was put on amatryptilene & within 2 weeks in hospital it nearly put me up a full stone in weight. They have now change it to nortryptilene & I'm wondering if this is going to pile lots of more weight on & if anyone had any experience with these medications.

Hi Susie Thank You for your reply - I mean no harm but I've been reading a few posts & its good to see I'm not the only one in this situation.

Reading the leaflet it says can cause weight loss or gain - My luck i'll pile more on but I think I'll give it a couple of weeks to see if it makes a difference.

I'm very paranoid about my weight now as I used to be 7st now I'm way above 11 :( but that was due to doctors giving me antidepressants & none agreed with me (in fact one made my body swell up right in front of my partner fingers, feet, ankles, face & neck) none worked for me as it turns out I was misdiagnosed with depression cause I said I was so tired & sore but its been this Neuropathic Pain - which if I'm honest is taking a while to set in that I have this - sometimes I feel like a fake :(

I'm on that many tablets I honestly get confused what I've taken as they all have different times.

I'm also waiting to hear back from the specialist as his secretary booked me in when he was on holiday & he told her he wanted to see me himself. Though I saw his consultant who didn't really say much apart from her had a meeting with radiology specialists & department heads. Kinda freaked me out as I was told in hospital that even although I have a horse shoe kidney & 2 parts to my pancreas that neither would cause the pain & sickness :( but even my partner got the feeling that the specialists consultant was holding back.

I dunno I've had it for 22years that I know of & I was born with jaundice as a baby so they now think this problem has always been there so waiting a few more weeks for an appointment with the specialist won't kill me.

I have really found this site very helpful & so glad I joined as sometimes its hard to explain to someone what its like - not that I would wish it on anyone.

I have to say mentally I feel so much better as I'm no longer getting told I'm depressed & forced to take anti depressants that its been the pain - apparently your body gets used to it so sometimes you don't feel the pain but it makes you down & tired.

My new gp is fantastic everything on repeat prescription & just to go every few months to see him. My old gp would give me a weeks supply or none at all as he didn't think it necessary.

Onward & upwards I hope once I see the specialist & set my mind at ease :)
