Bilateral laminectomy yesterday

So is this day one or day two? They said I could shower on day 3 but I don't know if that would be Friday or Saturday. Stupid question but I should have asked.

Anyway, I had the surgery yesterday at 7 AM, was home by 2:00. Dilaudid in 2 doses in recovery, some anti nausea injection after that. Didn't really need pain meds when I got home but hubby made me take one around 3 and another about 9.

If I could, I would jump for joy. The post op pain is nowhere near the level I had before the surgery. No shooting leg pains, no gnawing burning butt pains, just soreness basically. I can do sore!

They did say I would get some muscle spasms by day 3 (again, would that be Friday or Saturday?) but I have muscle relaxers for that.

Just wanted to check in and post something positive. Will update again tomorrow.

Have you called your surgeon's office and asked them?

When I had my back surgery, they counted the next day as day #1.

Technically speaking you start your count the day after surgery.

Congratulations as it seems your off to a successful outcome and that's terrific!

Dont over do or rush things because you feel better and are having no pain. That's the number 1 cause of failure in laminectomy's. Take it easy and follow your Surgeon's order's!

Day 2 and I have not had to take any pain pills. I am walking around the house and on the porch for about 5 minutes every hour or so. I have some coughing and congestion but Mucinex seems to be taking care of it.

I called the surgeons office about it and they said to call my PC doctor. Called him but of all things, he was having surgery on his back. His nurse said to call the surgeon. Typical. Anyway I don't have a fever and I'm not short of breath so I will stick with the Mucinex for now.

Overall I am so much better than I thought I would be. I will do exactly as they told me to and not try to push it.

Make sure your drinking plenty of water, pain medications can dry you out causing a cough, so try getting in lots of water. Many well wishes and prayers, hope you continue to improve...keep us posted...

great job, you are fighting the good fight. if your nerve sensory receptors are hardwiring the way you feel now, (and the optimism and proactive resolve), you are coming out off this healed, physically, mentally, and spiritually. awesome killer great job. NICK

Hi Linda, wow it sounds like you are doing great and that is awesome. I hope it continues for you, Just do not jump the gun & over do on anything & get yourself in trouble. Sometimes we can be our own worst enemy you know. You do need to drink a lot of water since you are taking Mucinex.

Thank you all for your well wishes! It's now day day 5 and I have not had a pain pill since day 2, and that was only to stop the coughing.

The hospital called for a survey. When she got to the question asking if my post op pain was mild, moderate or severe, I said "how about none. Zip. Nada." That stopped her in her tracks. Out of 100s of surveys she has never heard that before. I am truly blessed!

They gave me antibiotics in 2 injections, one before the surgery and one a couple of hours after, so I guess that was enough. Hubby says incision site looks good, just itches a bit and slightly sore.

We have a cold spell here so my walking routine is getting boring. We live in a shotgun style house so I get to walk back to front, front to back, rinse and repeat.

I will continue to report in, but in the meantime I wish all of you a pain free Thanksgiving.

Hi Linda ,

I am glad you are doing great . I know the feeling when waking up after the surgery and the leg pain is gone wink best feeling in the world . Remember to follow your post op instructions and take it easy . Keep us updated
