Still having Major pain after Hip surgery

hi! this is my first time on this forum. I had major reconstructive hip surgery in August. I am only 31 was it was kind of rare. I have still been in a lot of pain from it. I was mis diagnosed by the first doctor I saw and walked around on a very damaged hip for almost a year. I have been taking narco, to Percocet to opana from the start. I recived a epideral cathader after my surgery to combat pain. It kept my right upper side Numb but also had 5mg fentonyal in it. I had that taken out right away because of blood pressure problems. I am also bipolar and am on 4 medications for that, so something in the epiderl dropped my blood pressure. So I have no been on Percocet since September again. It has worked but then once it wears off and I take another it makes me sleepy. My doctor gave me butrans patches on Monday. He wants me to take these and use my pecocet for break threw pain. Until I am off the Percocet. Once I am off all this I will be having to go to inpaitent detox because of how long I will have been on these meds and the psych meds im on, he wants to watch me. I know this is a long story with lots of miss spelled words. But I am wondering about these patches. I have the 10 mg. I do see a pain specialist at Rush hospital in Chicago, he is a great doctor and I trust him. Im just nervous about the patch.
Just an FYI I cannot take anti-inflammitorys because of my psych meds already have the possible side effect of kidney and liver damage

Hello & welcome to the forum. You must understand that everyone reacts differently to medications. No two people will have the very same effect on a medication because we all metabolize medications differently.

Since you have a good pain mgt dr & trust him stick with him. That is half of the battle right there is having a dr you can trust. There are new rules & guidelines in place now concerning treatment of chronic pain. These drs are under the gun by the DEA & they are telling these drs what they can or cannot do. The drs are in fear of losing their licenses so everything has really tightened up where drs are concerned.

We have had some people here at the forum that was put on Butrans patches. If you will use the search feature above and type in Butrans patches you will pull up several posts with lots of information about them.

Hi RiotGirl,

I was on the Butrans patch for about 6 months (chronic neck pain). The patch worked fairly well, but I seem to have a tolerance for pain meds. It did work somewhat but I had to stop using it because I developed a bad rash where it was (the Drs said they had never seen one like it before). I was really nervous about using the patch too because I read about all the possible side effects (serotonin syndrome, etc) but it turned out to be fine! I was actually using 20 mg patches but I am also fairly big guy.

I had both my hips replaced in my 30's, so I can relate to you on that. It was a lof of pain but worth it in the long run! I will be sure to say a prayer for you and wish you luck!

Hello RG and welcome. I've actually been on butrans for a short while weaning down and off methane. Although it did what I needed it to do it wasn't great for pain in my case. I suspect your doctor's using it pretty much like mine,more help with trying to wean off other meds.

If you don't mind posting what bi mods you use I may be able to help more. I would personally be really leery on using most mods prescribed for bipolar issues with butrans simply because of the above mentioned serotonin syndrome which can be dangerous.

The drawback with a transdermal delivery system is once its on its entered your system unlike a pill you can stop the transdermal meds just would have to wear off.

My doctor is not using the patch to get me off anything
he is using it to help control my pain.basically as a plan to control my pain longer. I will detox once off it since
ive been on stuff so long..

My doctor and pharmacist checked and there are no interactions
with my bipolar meds. But I do take depakote.fluvoxomine, phropranalol
valium and lamictal
