Can Any one help me, is it safe for a Dr to take me off of oxycodone 90mg a day cold turkey?

Is a Dr allowed to just stop me cold turkey off of oxycodone after taking 30 mg 3 times a day totaling 90 mg a day for a year now and is it and how dangerous is this for me? could use all the feel back i can i am very worried about this please help me if anyone can and what can i do about what he is doing to me because i wanted to change Dr's he just dropped me cold turkey off of them, i really don't know what i should or can do about this?? and very scared of what can happen to me. any suggestions or help would be so appreciated thank you! how dangerous and legal is this????

Hi Madly and welcome to HW. Im not sure I understand the reason behind why he is doing it and it matters somewhat as to the question of if he can but Drs do not have to give you narcotics to treat pain.

Its not advised to stop any narcotic cold turkey yet again people do it everyday. The dangers lie in whether you stat hydrated keeping your blood pressure from increasing. You can certainly do things to treat the discomfort of the w/d symptoms such as immodium,benedryl,and something for your headaches and general feeling like your sick. Distractions and warm baths help but this will be no walk in the park.

If you have not run out yet start now tapering and rationing what meds you have left slowly getting down to the lowest you can.

Start looking for another Dr now but if you had a contract and somehow violated it those records will follow you making it difficult to get another Dr to treat you.

If it gets bad you can ask your primary or go to the ER to get clonidine,its a med or patch,no narcotics that will help with some of the symptoms.

It's just my opinion but I think your doctor is not thinking of what is best for you. I have been on oxy for a few years now and during this time my doctor has just not filled my prescription for a couple of months which of course means I withdraw and that sucks. I hope you will be ok, take care.

There is more than one version of the Hippocratic Oath (Doctor's Oath) For many drs the first do no harm part, doesn't apply to dealing with a patients pain, it applies to not doing more harm by adding the possibility of addiction to the patients problems.
