Hi M&G! I don't have the stats in front of me at the moment, but they were included in an article I read. What 'they' fail to tell the public when spouting off 'facts' like "8 people die every day from prescript
ion pain medication overdoses" (usually referring to oxycodone) is the fact that the vast majority of overdoses are caused by a 'COCKTAIL' of medications. Yes, oxycodone may found at autopsy, but usually something else is in the toxicology results, such as Xanax and/or Soma. Please don't quote me on this, but I think it was something like 80% or more of the overdoses involved other medications besides oxycodone - and it was the COMBINATION of the drugs that caused the overdose. Convenient fact to leave out, don't ya think?
And not to get political, but The 'War on Drugs', started in the early '80s, has been an unmitigated failure. It focuses on incarceration, rather than rehabilitation (which leads to the 'revolving-door' phenomenon). It gave us 'minimum-mandatory' sentencing (blatantly unfair/ridiculous - and in my opinion, against the constitution in many cases). And it is directly related to the problems CP patients are facing, when trying to get appropriate care for legitimate medical conditions. I could go on and on about
what a failure it's been and the problems its caused rather than solved, but I'll just leave it at that! (this was the subject of another paper I did for my Sociology class.)
